This is a fabulous photographic glass magic lantern slide. Black and white, labeled, Forestry. A Camp Blacksmith Shop; Making Bunkers. Near Woodhull Lake, Herkimer co. N. Y. 1912) This photograph shows two men working on bunkers in the snow at a lumber camp near Woodhull Lake in the Adirondack Mountains. Bunkers probably refers to the camp bunks, which were often 3 levels high, and the lowest one supported a deacons bench that ran the length of the camp on both sides. The camp blacksmith shop can be seen behind the men. Herkimer County is a county located in the U.S. state of New York. Its county seat is Herkimer. The county was created in 1791 north of the Mohawk River out of part of Montgomery County. 1800's Railroad Lincoln Pin, Link & Pin Coupling, Logging Train, Driftwood, PA.
Iron Lincoln Pin from a Link and Pin Coupling on a Logging Train This Pin Was Found near Driftwood. Pa. and used in the 1800's When Driftwood was a Boom Town for the Logging Industry The link and pin coupling(Lincoln Pin" was the original coupling used on American Railways. The link and pin coupling system consisted of a coupling pocket receiver. An oblong link, and securing pin. The oblong link was placed into the pocket, and the pin was dropped through the receiver securing the link. The other end of the link was connected to the coupling pocket of another car with another pin. This job was very dangerous, and many brakemen lost fingers or entire hands when they did not get them out in time. Some workers were crushed between cars or dragged under cars that were coupled to quickly. You can see by the bend in this pin, what the force ... moreof 2 logging cars can do. This pin is 1 1/4 inches of solid iron. In 1893 the railroad unions fought for and won the passage of the Safety Appliance Act, outlawing the"old man-killer" link and pin coupler. This iron pin is almost 14 inches long. And has a bend in it. It was probably thrown to the side of the tracks, with a few good curse words, when it bent. The former owner didn't know if this pin was found on the main line running through Driftwood, or one of the many narrow gauge lines that were used for logging. The tracks of the Philadelphia& Erie Railroad were placed in Driftwood in 1863. The last 3 photos of this listing show examples of the Link and Pin Coupling System. One shows the front of a locomotive with the pin in the receiver pocket. The second shows a logging car with the pin through the link, and the last photo is a very good museum photo of the link and pin coupling. 1897 Heisler Geared Locomotive Simpson Logging Mill Valley Mount Tamalpas CA RR
Up for sale is this vintage(as in authentic- not a reproduction! set of three 1897 pages about the Heisler Geared Locomotive with a wonderful full page schematic of one of the engines. All three pages measure 10" by 14" The first page is the schematic. This has no printing on the back as it was a special insert. The second page is the beginning of a two page article about the Heisler Geared Locomotive. This page has a picture of one from the Simpson Logging Company. I don't know what the word"Tollie" or"Tobbie" on the engine is for? Some local historian on logging railroads of the northwest may know? This page is printed on both sides. Though the backside is not about the Geared Locomotive. The third page is the last of the two page article about the Heisler Geared Locomotive. This page has a diagram of one ... morefor the Colorado and Northern Rail Road. Apparently this was built by Climax Mfg. Co. of Corry PA. I'm a little confused here as, with the little bit of research I did, the Colorado and Northern Rail Road was only in business from 1883 to 1884? There is printing on the backside which is not related to the Heisler. West Virginia By The Kelly Axe and Tool Works and it is also marked True Temper with a stamped 3.3 on the blade which may stand for 3 Lbs. 3 oz. and the total weight of the axe including the handle is 4 lbs. 13 oz. before packing. The double bit blade measures approx. 9 1/8 in. wide and the blade edges are 4 1/2 in. and 4 3/8 in. and the handle is 32 1/4 in. long. There is a slight wobble in the axe head on the handle so it is slightly loose. The handle has a small chunk out of it just below the axe head on one side but it still seems to be solid. If you decide on just having the axe head sawed off and shipped without the handle, I can do that for around $6.00 priority mail but I will quote a shipping price which ... moreincludes the handle for now.
