1850 Handwritten Diary -Lake Mich Schooner to Oconto, WI, Works in Logging Camp
Charles D. Shoemaker. The author of this diary, lived in Joliet Illinois. In the year 1850, he traveled by schooner from Chicago to Oconto, Wisconsin to work in a logging camp. This was not his first trip to Oconto. There is a brief description of a previous trip at the beginning of the diary. At the time of this diary. Logging was on it's way to becoming the leading industry in Wisconsin. It was hard, dangerous and poorly paid work, laborers made between 12- 25 dollars per month. The trees were felled in the winter months, cut and taken by teams to the river, then sent downstream to mills in the spring when the ice began to melt What is so fascinating about this diary is that the author made notes about working in each phase of the logging process. He left Joliet on October 21, 1850 and did not return until September 22, 1851, having ... morespent almost a full year working in the logging camp. During the author's 5 day trip on Lake Michigan. He noted the day and time they passed cities and landmarks- Waukegan, Milwaukee, So Washington, Sheboygan, Manitouwec. He also mentioned passing through the"door" which was Deaths Door, the site of many shipwrecks. He began work sawing the day after he arrived. He also had some other jobs: Nov 7. 1850.Went on board the brig Mary and got a boat load of corn. The Mill stood still. Nov 21.Left the Upper Mill in the morning. Went up to where we left the boat last night and found it frozen. We went down to the Steam Mill again and 9 of us brought a load of corn to the Upper Mill on a scow boat. Nov 23.Took a scow load of lumber out to the vessel. Was all day getting out into the Bay through the ice. Got unloaded two hours after dark. The wind blew like the devil into shore. We cast the scow boat loose from the vessel and went ashore locomotive speed. Dark and rainy and we got caught on a lee shore. Took the yawl and found the mouth of the river. This is a collection of 16"plates" of the lumber industry between WWI& WWI ~from workmen felling a tree with handsaws to finished boards in the sawmill. They measure 8"X11" They are reprints of photos& are labeled Plate with a number.They are not on photography paper. But the paper is a heavy slightly glossy paper, printed in USA. I don't know where the scenes take place. However one plate has a bandsaw with the label"the Famous Line" which is from the Sidney Tool Co. Another plate has a vintage bulldozer? with W.T. Co. and looks like it is run on steam. These are vintage machinery images suitable for framing. Blank on the reverse. A booklet comes with it that further explains each plate. This bid is for a vintage Logging or loggers shake or plank splitting froe. Froe measures 16" on the cutting edge(very sharp) with a 16.5" handle. The handle has a minor split. But is still solid and usable. Mallett measures 19" in length and 3" in diameter. These were used to split shakes or planks for cabin siding and roofs out of old growth cedar and fir. Offered here is a real photo postcard titled"Saw Mill Scene at Bridal Veil Lumbering Co. Near Bridal Veil. Ore. This is the second view of this operation that we are listing this week. This is a great image of the whole operation, the houses of Palmer up on the hill, the steam engine coming down the track along the right edge, the logs piled high in the yard. Found online about this company: The Oregon community of Bridal Veil evolved as a company mill town in the 1880s when one of Oregon's first paper mills was established on Bridal Veil Creek. A small community developed around the papermaking mill for the families of the workers. It was followed by the Bridal Veil Falls Lumbering Company that consisted of a logging operation and saw-mill on Larch Mountain. And a planing mill at Bridal Veil. The small community of Palmer was located ... moreone and one-half miles south of the community of Bridal Veil. And was a saw-mill and logging town for the Bridal Veil Lumbering Company. Palmer was located up Bridal Veil Canyon, on Bridal Veil Creek and was connected to Bridal Veil by Palmer Mill Road and a two-mile, wooden, v-shaped flume. Timber was rough-cut and then flumed down the mountain to the planing mill at Bridal Veil. The size of this card. And the size of five others we found at a local antique store, is odd, so it may have been trimmed. It measures 5-1/2" x 3-1/8" There is a small crease on the left edge and a bump on the edge. This is a super old log boom spike. This one is made of steel. It measures about 5 inches long and 2+1/4 inches wide. They used these by driving these into the logs and then ran chains through each spike to hold the log boom together. Most of these never survived because they ended up in the bottom of Puget Sound here in Washington. If you really wanted you could clean it up and make it look nice but you can't buy the worn and used look! Very neat! These are getting very hard to find! This saw has long wooden handles and has been cleaned and rubbed with all-natural beeswax to preserve it's great looking old wood and steel patinas, making it ready to display anywhere. It is still sharp and could be put to use. The blade is spring steel, measures 6 feet(72 inches) long and there are no missing, bent or broken teeth; everything the way it should be. The overall length of the saw is 76 inches from end to end and the old"western style" handles are very solid. As you can see in the pcitures. Recently found here in Maine. A circa 1920 RPPC of the the Chruch Logging Camp at Shirley. ME. Shirley is just several miles south of Greenville. This is card#2. Card measures 3.3 x 5.3. Quite good unused condition but with some slight soiling. Foxing, and bowing of card. Overall a rather interesting view. Guaranteed old and original. Circa 1920s, and not a later reprint of any sort. Antique 1900's Glass Negative+8x10 Photograph Men Logging Old Growth Timber
This is one of the Chas W. Bale items I have for sale. These are from the late 1800's or early 1900's. Dates and places have ranged from Detroit. Michigan, New York, Chicago, Seattle, Portland, and many others. This particular auction is for one glass negative and an accompanying 8x10 black and white photo print of the same. Maybe 20 years ago my parents had a friend of theirs make photos from a few of the prints just to see what they looked like and so I have about a dozen listings coming up that will have the negative and the photo. This one is of three men sitting and standing on the front porch of a log house cabin with all sorts of old growth timber around them. These are really cool images! They do come from a non smoking home. But have been in storage these past 100+ years in an old wooden crate so the condition of them varies. They are of BIG machinery and many from Specific named Steamers, ships hulls, dredges, stern wheel boats and lots of misc stuff. The old man who lived there and did the blueprints. And supposedly took these picture was named Chas. W. Bale. He lived in Portland, Oregon. He did work for Willamette Iron and Steel.
