I think this was a mail order item. Judging from the cord. I would age it to the 1940's. It is tin and is green in color, shaped like a cone with a wood bottom that is painted black. I don't think it was used much. If any. It is 6-3/4" tall, 4-3/4" across the base, and 1-1/8" across the top. it has 3 holes at the base of the cone. 1 for the cord. And 2 to release heat. It has some light scratches from being taken in and out of the box. The grommet where the cord goes in the cone is broken. This item would make a great addition to any collection. By on The process of turning a rooster into a capon is known as“caponization. Caponization happens between six and sixteen weeks of age. Depending on the producer and the chicken breed. Heritage chicken producers remove the testes of the cockerel surgically. While larger producers tend to induce caponization hormonally with the use of estrogen implants. The result in either case is a neutralization of the sex hormones which normally develop in roosters. Caponization is an old timer art; We know Romans learned how to farm chickens from the Greeks. But it also appears they may have been the first to caponize their birds. However, some feel that Chian and southeast Asia were doing this practice much earlier. We know in 162 BC there was a law passed making it illegal to eat a fattened hen. Most believe that is when the practice started. You can ... moreeven buy the kit with instructions still today. Most birds have no ill effects from the process. However. It does seem to be going out of style these days as it does involved pretty much major surgery on your bird and they can die from the surgery. The surgery can be done by hand instruments or electronic instruments. Typically after the surgery. A capon becomes much calmer and mellow and they will generally lose the aggression that you see with a rooster. It makes a capon easier to handle, and also changes the way the meat will mature. Vintage Glass Chicken Waterer 1872 Patent Self Dispensing Water Supply Has Chip
This is a vintage chicken waterer. Popular on farms many years ago for providing drinking water for the chicken flock. It is made of glass, has a projection in the center with a groove down it. It is used with a quart Mason jar, and to use, you fill the Mason jar with water, place the waterer upside down into the jar opening, so the projection goes into it, then holding the waterer against the mason jar, you upend the jar, so the waterer is on the bottom. Water will then feed into the circular trough as needed. A simple but effective device, with the marks PATENTED and NO 126997. It was actually patented May 21 1872, and there is information on these on the internet. In the course of use these usually got chips, especially at the bottom. This one does have a small chip along the lower rim. The last three photos show the chip in the center ... moreof the photos. You can barely feel it, just a little chip, but it reduces the value somewhat. When you look at other waterers like this being sold on ebay, you will see that most of them have chips, and larger chips than this. Makes an interesting farm collectible, or, can be used to water your chickens, or could be used for hummingbirds or other wildlife. Mason jars are available. This auction is for the waterer only, not the Mason jar. The waterer is 5 3/8" across, about 2 1/4" height, and uses a mason jar with a 2 3/16" opening. Mails priority at 3 lbs ship wt. Fully functional gqf 1588 incubator with automatic egg turner and quail egg racks. One chicken eggs rack is missing and this turner has only been used a couple of times. The incubator is approximately 1 year old. 30 plus jumbo pharoah quail eggs(xld1) are included with this package. This incubator is used therefore it has holes in it for inserting a temp guage at different levels during the incubation process of different breeds of eggs. This incubator has no humidity tray because I dry incubate. Then add water to the incubator with sponges, which keeps the humidity where it should be during the hatch process without have to open the lid to add water.
