Crimson Clover(Trifolium Incarnatum) is a true clover with annual habits. It sprouts in fall. Generally, and overwinters to bloom in the spring. It's a good bee forage, grazed extensively by deer and turkey, and grows dense roots that develop nodules which host rhizobia bacteria. These bacteria fix mineral or atmospheric nitrogen. When the plant dies; the roots decompose releasing that nitrogen to the soil to be used by other plants. Clovers contain a good deal more protein than other forage plants, and are valued as a pasture and hay crop. Crimson Clover cannot be mowed. Then recover to blossom, and will die without blooming. This makes it a good subject for a cover crop, because it's easily killed off by mowing before blooming if no longer desired. It grows 8 to 18 inches tall, with a bright red flower spike. Once it's established, ... moreit will re-seed itself, die, and repeat the cycle in the fall. Alternatively, once the seed-heads brown, they can be clipped, allowed to dry in a paper bag, and then torn apart and shaken in the bag to harvest the seed. Adlumia fungosa is the scientific name for a vine related to the old-fashioned bleeding-heart(Dicentra spectabilis or Lamprocapnos spectabilis) I call it the climbing bleeding heart. But others call it Alleghany vine or climbing fumitory. It's native to the Appalachians and Great Lakes region. It grows about 15 feet long. Climbing by the ends of the leaves, which curl like tendrils around the support. Its leaves are intricately divided into many leaflets, somewhat like a fern. The flowers are white to pink and grow abundantly in tight bunches when the plant is given sun. They are long and not quite as heart-shaped as the old-fashioned bleeding-heart. After blooming. The petals dry up and turn white or brown, and a pod forms inside, encircled by the petals(see photos 1 and 3) This is a biennial. Its life cycle is two years. Petals and all, in a plastic bag. The pods are delicate and easily broken. They may break during shipment, but if they don't, squeeze the pods between your fingers in order to remove the seeds. Be careful while removing the seeds, because they are small and somewhat sticky. If you wish me to remove the seeds and ship them without the pods, let me know. I would recommend immediately sowing the seeds in the ground. They seem to like a spot with well-drained soil and moisture. Give them a support to climb on.
