Before hybrid seed corn, when farmers selected the best ears of corn from the field to save for the next year’s seed. Ears of corn were stuck onto the spikes and hung in the barn and allowed to dry. The spikes measure 19 inches long and have loops and hooks on the tops and bottoms for hooking onto each other as shown in the pictures. This is a very fine& unusual example of Santa Clara Brownware. As you can see from photo#2. It displays beautifully with pottery from other Pueblos as well as Hopi. This is a rare and unusual color combination with a brown background that gradually become darker toward the base. The simple rain cloud& lightning design elements are done in a charcoal grey. Although this piece is un-signed, I understand that Carmelita Dunlap experimented with this color combination, so this may have been done by one of her contemporaries or a novice admirer. It is nicely done& demonstrates the care and attention to detail that you would expect from a seasoned artist. It is 6.75" wide by 5" high. Lightly polished, balanced& symmetrical.
