Used Emery Tarpon Fly Reel
Used John Emery Tarpon Fly Reel Famed Florida Keys guide John Emery designed and manufactured these fly reels during the 1970’s. Due to his untimely early death there are thought to be less than 400 total made. In two different sizes. This reel. Serial number 063, is the tarpon size. It has a 4 ¼” diameter spool and is 1 3/16” wide. It is reported to weigh 13.6 oz. The reel features a large diameter. Very smooth, widely adjustable cork drag, silent in and out, standard arbor spool that is highly ventilated on the front side, palming rim and full frame. Reel seats on original Emery reels were a weak point in the design. Many originals were retrofitted. On this reel. The original seat has been replaced with an Abel seat. Because the Abel base is not as wide as the original seat, there is an area on the reel's frame that is exposed ... moreand does not match the black finish on the rest of the reel. There is no evidence of any corrosion around the base of the seat. The reel is otherwise in excellent condition. It appears that the Abel foot has been very slightly bent. Though it fits on Sage Xi3 and G Loomis NRX reel seats well. There is one tiny ding on the back side of the frame, and an even smaller one on the front of the spool. But no other noticeable scratches inside or out. There is also no rust or corrosion evident. The reel is set up for right hand wind and cannot be reversed. NO RESERVE AUCTION Disclaimer: I am not an absolute expert on these reels. I have done a lot of research and have made some educated guesses based on what I have found. If you have questions please ask and I will certainly answer to the best of my ability. Unfortunately the maker is not around to verify every detail about the reel. I did take this reel apart to inspect the innards. Everything is as pictured with the exception that I added some high quality lube. This reel is ready to use. Add a little gear oil in the oil port is the only maintenance you will need. You are bidding on an early rare find. A 1900's Edward Vom Hofe model 471 size 4/0 from what I can decipher. Brown hard rubber reels sides, with the inscription of the previous owner. Looks like Capt. E.J. Rose. Reel winds smooth as silk. Drag works as it should, can slide down ... moreto disengage and back up to engage. Twist the knob and drag increases. It does appear to have a line burn on the front cross member. The insides looked pretty clean, there was some solder on the gear bridge, I assume that the crank was originally pressed in and over the years maybe pulled out, I don't know. Maybe that was original, but seems more likely a repair. Everything was structurally sound though. There appears to have a slight crack where the spindle sits. The spindle has a very small play in it but I don't think that has anything to do with the crack and there is no interference when I put pressure on the spindle and wind. Reel foot appears to have been filed down at some point in its life. Again this reel has been used, and my goal is to put it back in the hands of someone who will continue to use it. This reel still has a lot of life left in it. Overall measurements of the reel face is 3 7/8" diameter by 2 1/2" across. Based on some other pictures and details from catalogs I am thinking this is a very early production run. A few key things that make me think this: Reel crank screws off by rotating counterclockwise. There are assorted patterns tied on various hook sizes, lead eyes, bead eyes, and unweighted. Early Edward Vom Hofe Bass& Tarpon Reel. Model 481 with German Silver hard rubber side plates in 4/0 size, with a 4" diameter and 1 3/4" wide spool. Later called the Pasque, this tarpon reel fitted with sliding oil caps marked"Edward Vom Hofe- Maker- Fulton St, NY" It has a reverse"S" handle that screws off and a mounted click switch(stuck in the on position) Engraved with H.F. Webster on the head plate, with small free initials on the tail plate. Reference to Mr. Webster was found in the October 1890 issue of Outing Magazine listing him along with J.H. This Seamaster S Handle Tarpon Model Anti Reverse fly reel is mechanically perfect. With a butter smooth drag and flawless feel. It has normal rim rash, and a previous owner carved his initials in the spool and frame. Also, the reel foot ends are dinged a bit, but it does not affect mounting on the reel seat of any rods I have seen. A great reel for someone who wants to fish one of these classic reels. Right hand wind, not convertible.
