When the resin flows from the trees branches and trunk it produces a sweet fragrance that attracts many insects and small animals. Once the insect comes in contact with the resin it is then trapped and stuck to this very sticky residue then as the resin continues to flow it eventually covers its victims and then finally preserving them as they were millions of years ago. Resin that is under 1.6 million years old is considered copal. Amber from the Baltic ocean is aged at 40-50 million years old and has been transformed to a harder substance known as fossilized amber. The forest in which these specimens come from is now under the ocean from continental shifting ... moreand pieces of this amber are washed across the beaches of the Baltic ocean the collected and polished to expose the insects inside. The insect inside these pieces are either extinct or have been dramatically changed by evolution and time. So don't be surprised to see a gnat the size of a fly and a fly the size of a gnat that we see now days or even a wasp the size of a flea! There are many fakes out there and sell plastic replicas and are hard to distinguish the difference unless chemical tested. Another way to check is to look for hairline cracks. Amber is very hard and after millions of years it tends to start to shatter or crack! If you see these cracks then there is a great possibility that it is genuine. If you see an insect as it is today then it is more then likely fake or a more recent inclusions from what is called copal and is usually under 1 million years old. Also under certain spectrum's of light true amber will emit a blue reflection of light and i try do this on a few of my auctions, I would do them all but takes a lot of time to set up.
