RARE Flower with 2 Winged Ants, 5 Biting Midges in Authentic Dominican Amber
This fully polished piece of all-natural authentic Dominican amber from the mines in the Dominican Republic contains a rare flower along with two winged ants and five(5) biting midges. There is also an enhydro in this piece near one edge. Enhydros are water bubbles that contain an entrapped air bubble that can be seen moving as the piece is turned. The water in these enhydros has been dated by geological studies to be between 17 and 20 million years old! The flower is from an unknown botanical source. Moth, Worker Ant, Biting Midges, Fungus Gnats, Bee in Colombian Copal Amber
This is a beautifully polished piece of Colombian copal amber that contains lots to see at a good price! There is a moth. A worker ant, several biting midges and fungus gnats, along with a partial, large bee. This fossil may be up to 2 million years old! Please mouse over images to see a larger view. For your information: Copal differs from fossil amber in both its age and its hardness: copal being younger and softer with amber being older and harder. Copal is also typically lighter in color than amber. But this does not take away from its natural beauty nor its potential scientific value. In fact. An article published in September 2007 described a new species of orchid bee that was not known to exist previously. The age of this copal has been a matter of discussion for years. And I still see no one's finds being well-accepted. Inclusions ... moreare often superbly preserved! Major copal deposits can be found in Colombia. South America and the island of Madagascar off the eastern coast of Africa.
