Scarce and unusual 19th-century pictorial stove advertising broadside Advertising broadside for the Barstow Stove Company. 228& 230 Water Street and 118& 120 Beekman Street, New York City, 56& 58 Union Street, Boston, and Providence, Rhode Island, 1880s- 1890s, printed in two colors on a sheet of tissue-thin fibrous laid Japan paper measuring 14.5 x 10.75 in. overall. A bit of mild handling wear to margins, otherwise fine, well-preserved, attractive condition. A highly unusual. Possibly unique survival, notable for being printed on a handmade sheet of paper so fine-far thinner and more transparent than conventional tissue paper-that text can easily be read through it. As it would be highly impractical and expensive to print a large run of an advertising piece on such delicate stock, one surmises that it was made as a sort of"whimsy" ... moreby the printer(Livermore& Knight, Providence) or perhaps as a demonstration of advanced printing-press prowess. The sheet includes a large engraving captioned"Interior View of Our New York Salesrooms. depicting several figures examining a variety of different stoves. A piece of ornate cast iron for a Garland wood stove/ range. Not sure of the original purpose. The part is apr. 7 1/2 inches in diameter and apr. 9 inches long including the part that hooks in to the stove. It is apr. 3/4 inch thick. There is loss and wear to the plated finish along with an area of pitting which is shown in a closeup. We did not notice any damage. Cracks, chips, etc. The pictures should show the rest.
