The use of weights and scales to check the weight of circulating coins have been documented since the 13 th Century. Special sets of scales and weights were in use since the 16th Century.and the reason for this was simply because thare was a practice of'shaving' valuble gold coins! This auction is for a set of scales and weights dating from the late 18th Century. The set is composed of a set of scales and an exceptional pair of coin weights. The scales have 1.5" brass panes suspended on a 4.25" steel beam. Which has boxfinials. The weights are marked 5.8 and 2.16 which were the weights for guineas and half guineas minted between 1772 and 1799(the year the guinea was last minted) There is a scpace for the quarter guinea weight. Which is missing. The weights have the anchor verification mark for Birmingham. The set is house ... morein an oval jappaned metal hinged box, which has a good hinge. A favorite with trappers and anyone else needing a compact scale to weigh heavy loads. This hand forged iron scale has a crescent or half moon shaped solid brass dial reading from 0 to 18 Kg. Superb Antique Victorian English Nickel Plated Brass Postal Scales Balance
Postal scales were introduced in the mid 19th Century after Rowland Hill(the founder of the postage stamp) suggested that letters should be charged by weight rather than number of pages. After this. Most wealthy homes had their own set. This auction is for a rare small set that would make a wonderful talking point to any room. T he set was clearly a more expensive set than some as it was nickel plated rather than plain brass. Unfortunately the plating has worn off most of the platesa nd some of the weights. But it is still a very attractive set. The scapes have six weights from 4oz to 1/2oz and a fine polished oak base. The letter plate has the postage rates in use from 1897. Thus dating the set. The scales measure 8.5" by 5.5" by 4" high. A highly collectable piece of history.

In earlier times. We had to rely on passing or visiting apothecaries for our medicines. To dispense them, the apothecary used sets of hand held beam balances and weights. These had panes made of varying materials depending on the preparation being dispensed and the scales continued to be used in dispensing chemists until the advent of more modern weighing machines. This auction is for a superb and increasingly rare set of scales. The set was made by the renowned English manufacturer De Grave& Short. This was an old London firm. Which claimed to have been founded in the 17th century. From 1817 to 1844 the business was known as De Grave and Son, and from 1845 to 1871 it was De Grave Short.as with this set. The firm became part of the Avery organisation in the early 1900s The set is operated by depressing a lever. Which lifts the beam and ... morepans, enabling items to be weighed. The set has a 7.5" beam two brass panes(one with a handle) and one glass pane glass panes, measuring 2.75" in diameter together with a brass pane of the same diameter. Panes of different materials were used for differnt substances. There are also a number of brass apothecary weights, in a card tub. Antique 1800's Italian FRATI Pharmacy Finger Balance Scales Apothecary Estate
NO RESERVE 7-DAY AUCTION Up for auction is this extremely old set of French or Italian balance or finger scales. This pair of scales was found in their case in the bottom of a box I purchased at an estate auction. I also found a set of 1800's Drachm and Scruple Weights in their original case I am selling in another auction. These scales operate just fine. I used a set of weights I already had to verify this. The metal on the top just below the cloth finial reads'FRATI' in very faint lettering. I looked this up and the word appears to be Italian. I looked but couldn't find any other markings. The oxidation is thick so there might be a maker's mark underneath I couldn't see. I didn't want to clean these as the oxidation is enough proof as to the age. The balance lever(top bar that holds the two bowls) measures 4-3/4" ... morelong. The bowls measure 1-5/8" in diameter and drop approx. 4-1/4" from the balance lever. Antique Cast Iron Balance Scales Original Tray Unique Set, Postal?
Here's a great old cast iron antique balance scale just discovered at a southern Ohio extravaganza sale. It is in wonderful condition with the original tray and balanced right. The bottom stretch of the scale reads"To Weigh 14 LB" and it is cast into the scale itself. It can be seen in photo#6. I'm not sure why it is there but definitely meant to be there. I would assume it was intended for a 14 Lb exact weight when in use back in the day. Maybe a postal scale. Hardware, or other use. I'm lead to believe it more fitting a hardware store but not sure. Comes with what looks like a couple of handmade 4 and 5 pennyweight lead weights(weigh as marked) 2 x two brass scruple weights, a brass half ounce weight and a grain weight. RARE ANTIQUE Portable Oertling Laboratory Balance Assay Scales 1890 Description PLEASE SEE ALL MY PHOTOGRAPHS WHICH ALSO FORM PART OF MY ITEM DESCRIPTION These are a very collectable set of portable antique Oertling Laboratory balances or scales- they can be used for scientific purposes or alternatively as assay scales for weighing precious metals or stones. They are English in construction and dates to the end of the 19th century. C 1890. The base of the brass column is signed OERTLING LONDON. The case is made of a lovely rich mahogany wood- which has been varnished. I would imagine that you might wish to have someone strip of the old varnish and to french polish the outside of the case- as there are some losses to the old varnish commensurate with age. The wood on the interior is nice and clean- and would not need to be touched. ... moreApart from the little losses to the varnish(mainly confined to the top) there is also a little split to the rear(photographed) again could be easily restored. The box is about 9 inches square and is about 2 1/2 inches deep. It has a lacquered brass beam balance and two tiny suspension pans. Which are currently secured in the travelling position. Below the balance are two small drawers with little antique white natural handles. The drawer contains a little knob which s lifts the balance beam. The pans pivot on agate bearings. Dimensions: The Balance Box measures 13 3/8 inches high. 8 1/4 inch deep and 15 9/16 inches wide. This analytic balance sits on a fixed base that measures 16 1/2 inches wide and 9 3/16 inches deep. The base is supported by three legs. R ear leg is wood. And it is not adjustable.
