1904 Zon-O-Phone Concert Phonograph w/Fancy Arms & Original 26" Brass Horn
Make sure to check out all of my auctions after you've looked at this one. I'm listing an outstanding assortment of musical. Electrical and mechanical antiques, and I suspect that there will be something of interest to almost everyone. Here's a very pretty Zon-O-Phone Concert front mount disc phonograph manufactured 110 years ago. The phonograph is complete and running. And it retains its original paper notice on the underside of the base. This is one of the last of the true Zon-O-Phones, with long fancy arms, a metal motorboard, a long brass horn and a rectangular cabinet. In 1905, after it purchased the company, Victor re-styled the entire Zon-O-Phone line-up so that Zon-O-Phones produced from that point forward looked little different than other Victors. The quarter-sawn oak cabinet is in great shape. With no significant dings ... moreand no damage. Motor and mechanism are original and there don't appear to be any distressed or damaged gears. Speed control screw is original, with some pitting, as you can see in the photographs. Bedplate has some tarnish on it, but overall it's in good shape. The reproducer is an older replica of a Zon-O-Phone Concert V. It's in decent shape. With a diaphragm that's still intact and a good needle-bar. Lettering behind the diaphragm is still crisp and clear. Brake assembly is original and working properly. The original 26" all-brass Zon-O-Phone horn is in decent shape. With a normal amount of dings and tarnish, as you can see in the photos. I believe the elbow has been resoldered to the nozzle, but the connection is secure and seamless. This is the largest horn and arm assembly you could use to outfit a Concert, so there's a fair amount of downward tracking force on the records. Consequently, when you're setting up the phonograph, you need to position the arm so that reproducer falls about an inch shy of the spindle. The 43 rd division has a very long history going back to 1627. They fought in just about eveery war the US has been in. This coat of arms was brought out in 1927 and has been modafied three time as best I can tell. I found the history of the unit on line and I will include it in the sale if the item. Circa 1934 State of Pennsylvania coat of arms embroidered on silk. This kind of embroidery was done in Japan around the turn of the Century catering to Western visitors who had them custom made as souvenirs or memorials of their voyage to the Far East. Silk fabric is mounted on the reverse on an old Japanese newspaper. Early depictions of this blazon. Such as the one painted by John Rutter in 1785 to replace the Royal arms in use before Independence, tend to have white horses and later ones black horses. In very good used condition with minor imperfections to frame as shown. Shipped fully insured with tracking number. She is approximately 6 3/4 inches tall and the base of the cushion is 4 inches in diameter. Her dress is voile-like fabric with a pink braided gimp around her waist and another midway to the base. The fabric also has pink streaks and spots. There is a factory defect on the lady's dress over the right breast and another over the left and also on each arm where there was a"lump" in the clay or glazing otherwise it is in excellent condition. 1852 Cal Gold Token - Arms of California - Nathan Joseph NGC MS-66 Stunning!
I have always been fascinated by California Gold Tokens… yes. That’s right, TOKENS. Certainly not as well known as their denominated brothers and much maligned, they have a history that is as rich and varied as California itself. First, let’s debunk a few myths. While the old saw, anything with a bear is worthless” may be good general advice for the uneducated, there are bears that are good, as there are tokens that may even be rarer and more desirable than many of the denominated pieces. You just have to understand the process that brought the generations of these interesting little pieces of exonumia into existence. Initially, fractional coinage was created to meet the needs of trade. Coins, even privately minted ones, were preferable to gold dust where there was a constant debate over the rates. The manufacturers were generally jewelers ... moreby trade, though the early equipment was crude. Once the San Francisco Mint opened in 1854, the need for the coins lessened, but the jewelers had made money with their products and were loathe to quit. There also was a developing souvenir market that created a new demand so in the frontier environment, they continued to make their denominated fractionals and figured that the government would be hard-pressed to enforce their mandates. Eventually, that proved false and the government threats led the jewelers to subterfuge… first backdating their products and then removing the denominations… which created the tokens and charms. Understand that the same people who made the denominated pieces made the tokens. Possibly the first contemporary token was the Washington Head Gold Charm in 1872. After the charm received no negative reaction from the government, the jewelers went ahead and issued the same obverse with a denominated reverse. These are quite popular and valuable… but the token is equally are and I have sold them for four figure numbers! Otherwise they were put in storage, where they were shifted around with other parts for a long time. They never been mounted on a bottom bracket. Nor have pedals been inserted(the threads are perfect) and the packaging is original. Unfortunately. There are several small scratches on the right hand crank in the vicinity of the dust cap/crank auto extractor which is the only sign of handling that I note. The chrome need to be cleaned and polished; the black base has some paint missing that can be easily be painted. Some scuffs and scratches that will be less noticeable after a good cleaning and polish. The lamp 4 arms swivels 180 degree the electrical is fully functional it takes standard size light bulb.
