SHELDON STEADY REST FOR 11-1/4" LATHE This is a Sheldon steady rest for an 11-1/4" lathe. Model SE-56, from the mid-1940's. It should fit any 11-1/4" Sheldon lathe from 1941 to the mid 1950's. The top casting is marked XK576 and the bottom casting is marked XK575. The X's denote that it is a later, improved design of steady from the original. The steady rest is cast iron. It is missing the three original steel fingers that contact the work. And the bottom clamp and bolt that secures it to the lathe bed. It weighs about 10 pounds. If you make them. The dimensions of the three missing fingers are as follows: Overall size: 2.930" length X 0.930" width X 0.440" thickness. Dimensions of slot: 2.155" long X 0.475" wide. Starting 0.267" from the flat end of the finger. Tapered end is tapered ... moredown to a width of 0.330" starting 0.175" from the end. I bought it on Ebay some years ago as a second steady rest. But have never made the missing fingers for it! I repainted it last March with Rustoleum Dark Machine Gray paint.

Rare Antique Hardinge Adjustable Steady Rest for the Watchmaker's Lathe For the watchmakers and the horological tool collectors out there. This is the"Holy Grail" of steady rests made for the watchmaker's lathe! As most are aware, the Hardinge Brothers Company from Chicago manufactured only top quality tools and collets for the watchmaking trade. They mainly made accessories to fit the many contemporary brands of watchmaker's and small precision lathes that were available in the early 20th century. This particular accessory was made to fit a standard"W-W" style watchmaker's lathe, so it can be used on any American Watch Tool, Levin, Derbyshire, Lorch, Boley, Wolf-Jahn or other"W-W" style lathe with 50 mm center height. As you can see in the photos, it is rapidly adjustable to fit the work you ... moreare turning, by simply rotating an adjusting ring with spiral grooves that engage the three jaws. The ring is adjusted with a special pin spanner that fits the two holes in this ring, as you can see in the photos. The jaws can then be locked in that position with the knurled knob at the base of the steady rest. This 100+ year old tool is in excellent condition with all the original plating. Aside from the two scratches on one side, there are no other signs of any abuse, and it functions perfectly. The wrench is not original, but was made some time ago by a craftsman who did a nice job. It fits perfectly. The jaws are also reversible to allow for a broader range of radii. These steady rests are a pleasure to use, and they are quite hard to come by. I photographed the tool on a standard Levin"w-w" style lathe for illustration. The lathe is not included in the auction) I also photographed two pages from an original Hardinge catalog from circa 1910, and as you can see, the price for this model was $12.00, or nearly double the $6.50 cost for a conventional steady rest which required the jaws to be adjusted individually. Small Steady Rest Tool for Boley or other brand watchmaker lathe jeweler
Slimming down my collection. I accumulated a few jeweler and watchmaker machine parts in my quest to build some custom miniature axle parts. I am not a jeweler or watchmaker, so these are sold as is, I don't know much about them or their tolerances(or sizes) other than what you can see in the pictures, I recently discovered Taig and Sherline machines which are slightly larger and good enough for my purposes and not considered collectible, which is more comfortable for my budget. Some of this stuff is from the early 1900's. Some is from the 1950's and 1960's, and a few things from more recent times, but for the most part I don't know which is which. Steady Rest from 12" Clausing Lathe, Needs a little TLC
Offered here is a Steady Rest that came from a 12" Clausing Lathe. I do not know the model lathe it came off of. But to help determine if this will fit your lathe following are some basic dimensions: From the center of the Vee Way to the inside of the Flat way is approximately 3-3/4" and from the Flat way straight up to the center of the opening measures approximately 6-1/4" The opening in the steady rest is approximately 4-1/4" This Steady Rest needs some attention. One of the guide brackets had been broken and repaired. That appears to be a good repair job. One of the fingers is missing and in my opinion all 3 should be replaced. The fingers measure 3/4" wide x 1/4" thick, so it should not be too much of an issue to replace them. The lower clamp is included, as shown in the picture. Here is a complete and all original steady rest from a 10 Atlas metal Lathe. This one has the correct bottom clamp wich many do not. Nice condition. no damage. The lathe was owned by an old man who bought it new. He took great care of it and only used it for a hobby lathe. Shipping on the steady rest will be $13.99 in the lower 48 states. I have Union 4 jaw chuck that came with this lathe that was only mounted on the lathe 2 times for about 15 minutes. it is super tight and you will never find another with that little use. This steady rest is in good condition. All the parts are free, the bearing surfaces don't show wear, the paint is scratched in places and there is some surface rust, I haven't cleaned this up, it has been in my toolbox for 25 years. I believe this steady rest is for a South Bend/ Le Blond lathe as the name South Bend is indicated on the casting, I don't know for sure as I am not a machinist, also I can't tell for sure if it for a 12 or 13 inch lathe as it measures approx. 6-1/2 inches from the base to the center.
