W H Harling vintage boxed drawing instrument set, parallel rule, scale ruler
W. H. Harling large mathematical drawing instrument set consisting of pens. Compasses, scale rules, brass parallel rolling rule, all contained in a mahogany veneer box. Box has a brass lozenge set in the lid- not engraved. And a brass escutchion plate and lock- no key. Front edge of the lid has a small area of damage and each end of the box base has small areas of veneer loss. Box has other areas of age related wear and tear and veneer damage but overall is in good condition. Box measures approximately 37 cm x 13.5 cm x 8 cm high. Lid is lined with a blue material printed with the makers name. Material has assorted marks/stains but no tears. Top insert tray is covered in a purple felt material which is in good conidition. Left hand end of the tray surround is missing and the rear section is in need of partial reglueing. Range of instruments ... morein the tray including 3 with bone. Or other natural material, handles. All the instruments show signs of use and some have marks/tarnish minor rust marks in places. All moveable parts are working and screw threads on instruments are operational. Bottom section of the box contains a section for scale rules and contains 5 engine divided rulers made I presume of Boxwood. All the rulers show signs of use with minor ink marks and 1 has initials in it. All have some minor nicks along the edges and 1 has a further 2cm area of edge damage. Front section of the box base should have 3 comparments but is missing 1 divider section. Left hand compartment has 5 small wooden rule sections again showing some signs of use with minor nicks along the edges. Centre section is lined with purple felt and contains some further instuments and this section merges into the unlined right compartment due to the missing wooden divider. Front section is designed so that the brass rolling parallel rule sits over the top. Roling rule is made of brass which has then been treated so that it is a blue/grey colour apart from the rollers. Vintage Starrett Adjustable Parallel Set#S 154 L Parallels are vintage in Good to Fair Condition. They have wear and scratches from normal use. A couple of them have the screw head slots worn out. So they will need new screws for adjusting tension, or recut slots to sharpen them. Overall in descent condition considering the age of tools. These came from a retired diemaker that retired 15 years ago. I suppose if you had access to a surface grinder they could be reground to perfection with a very light grind. I do not have access anymore. I was going to stone them but it may make them un-parallel. Great set for floor diemaking work. I try to take descriptive photos. So please look at them.
