great old wood lathe part. I think. I found this in my father's workshop, in the area of a massive, 7-8' lathe base. I can remember him using the lathe around 1960, but don't know what happened to it. The base is still there, and this part by the base, unused for 50 years. It is in very good condition, only surface rust. all parts work smoothly. Adjustable up, down and all around! It weighs around 30 pounds. The original casting measurement is 2 5/8" from the center of the V to the center of the flat on the other side. the V looks to be 5/16" deep on the original casting. This Steady rest has three supports instead of the usual two. I would guess it to be for a 10. 11, or maybe 12" swing lathe. I can not say for sure. There is no name or model number on it that I can see. Dimension: Distance from center of the brass spindles to the bottom of the machined base is approx. 5 1/4" Overall length at the base is 15 5/8" outside measurements with 2 holes that are 1/2" diameter. Center to center distance between the mounting holes is 13 1/2" Sold as Is, No returns. So please ask questions.

Used- Big 24" tall Steady Rest with 12" hole and roller bearing support. This item measures 24" tall and has a 12" hole. The roller pegs will open to allow roughly a 3.5" to 8" item. Rollers are in good shape. The bottom measures 8" from the middle of the V to the the far edge of the flat spot. The hinge was brazed at some point and still feels strong. This is an old steady rest for what looks like a 16" lathe. This is a nice well built steady rest, I wish it fit my 18" lathe. It actually came with my lathe lathe when I bought it, but It didn't fit it. I was going to make an adapter for it, but I found a steady rest that's correct for my machine. The name on the lathe is Whitcomb. After researching, I have found that Derbyshire/Whitcomb companies merged around 1913. My lathe looks a lot like the 1913 version shown. It is 7-1/2" from the bed flat to the work center and the work opening is 3-1/2" The brass fingers are in very good condition and the rest has been stripped and refinished in med.machine grey.
