Spectacular 1930-35 CROSS (South Bend) #2520 8-1/2' 3/2 Split Bamboo Fresh Water
It's my pleasure to offer at auction an Extraordinary and rather Scarce 1930-1935 CROSS(South Bend) NO.2520 8-1/2 FT. 3/2 SPLIT BAMBOO"SINGLEBUILT" FRESH WATER TROLLING ROD WITH THE ORIGINAL, CORRECTLY LABELED BAG. This gem is one of two absolutely Spectacular rods from Cross/South Bend that I've recently acquired. The other will be listed within days of this one. They are both the finest examples of their model that I've ever seen. The#2520"Singlebuilt" was first introduced around 1930, a few years after South Bend's purchase of the Cross Rod Co. and would be offered in South Bend catalogs through 1935. The sliding band is stamped"Single CROSS Built" as well as"PAT. FEB.15,1927" This was the patent assigned to Wes Jordan and South Bend for the screw-locking reel seat. The butt section's ... morerodshaft carries the serial# 8243, matching the number on the bag label. I've added a photo of the original listing for this very powerful rod from South Bend's 1934 catalog. Built with what could be either high-grade Tonkin or Calcutta cane(back then, on these models, you could specify the"color" of the wood you wanted) and comes equipped with extra tip section, first guide& tip tops of genuine orange agate, 9) bell guides, high quality Cross"supreme" welted and serrated ferrules, knurled nickel silver winding check, patented screw-locking reel seat, elongated solid cork grip& foregrip and very closely wound in maroon silk tipped in what could be chestnut. There are no less than 153 individual wraps. Rod is in solid Extra Fine condition, as nice as they come. I see no evidence of any use, yet to state that it's"unused" would be irresponsible. I will say that you would have to live a long time to see a finer one. Or for that matter, another one, as I've seen only one other about 12 years ago. Bamboo is absolutely perfect, with no splits, cracks or delamination whatsoever. All sections are the correct equal length and

Here is a Vintage Mil wards of England Solid Wood Salmon Rod. This is a 3 piece 1 tip with a length of 10 feet 7 inches. I believe this rod is Greenheart but not sure. Th e t ip section is short by 2.5 inches. The ferrules are spiked and brass in construction. The mid has all the guides but the but need to have the agate or glass insert reattached. The tip section needs 3 guides replaced. These are the t hin wire casting style guides. The cork grip is 16.5 inches long. The reelseat. Cork a nd ferrules are in good sh ape. The Milwards name is l egible on the butt ca p. The sliding ri ngs for t he reel are brass in construction. The sections are pretty straight but t he tip has some fishing experience. Growing up in Cocoa Beach in the 60's I sure wish I would have kept more of my SURFER magazines. This early edition got a lot of going over. You can tell by the scan that it can only be described as being in"GOOD" condition at best but heres the deal.it is completely intact with no loose or missing pages. Rick Griffin cartoons. Great old ads and articles on Banzai Pipeline and surfing in France of all places. If you were surfing in the 60s this is really going to take you back, and if you surf now but weren't even born in the 60s then trip on this early issue. This is an Orvis"All-Rounder" 8' 3" 2 1/2 oz. 2 pc. fly rod. Rated 7 wt. by Orvis, at 2 1/2 oz. this is the same weight as an 8 1/2 ft. 5 wt. Henry's Fork" or an 8 ft. 6 wt. Trout" model, which often weighs in at 2 1/2 oz. Go figure. It is a medium action with a strong back half and softer towards the tip, probably why they rated it for 7 line, because of the strong back half. It is a light 7 wt. and fishes well with a floating or sinking 6, which were the lnes I liked best on it and a DT 5 floating works real well too. This one's in good shape, see the pictures. 2 tips here, the main tip that is original to the rod and a"spare" tip that is 4 inches short, that came off another"All-Rounder" I broke and had repaired by Orvis, so you will have two rods here really. The wraps are all virtually ... moreidentical, a dark burgundy/cordovan color. The tip that's 4 inches short fishes of course a touch faster and heavier, more a true 7 wt. and real suitable for bass bugs or big terrestrials. With this tip on, it's a 7' 11" rod. So there's an original, un-messed with 8' 3" rod, plus a spare tip that's 4 inches short from another"All Rounder. Tube and sock too.

The glass-on fins have carbon fiber glassed into the inside face of the fins(see photos) The fins are in perfect condition. Never repaired and no stress marks. The deck is clear. And the bottom and rails were airbrushed blue(see photo) The bluing on the bottom has an attractive splattering pattern throughout. A black pin-line separates the deck from the rails. All laminates and coloring is original. And is located under the glassing. This board has never been repaired and has no open dings. It has just a few minor pressure marks on the deck(just a few and very slight) Other than that. It’s a clean board. This board is void of the following conditions: no de lamination.
