Equine Horse Dental Wedge Mouth Speculum and Floats, Float Teeth, used
Two floats and a dental wedge/speculum. The wedge and the carbide blade float work great. The smaller float is missing a blade and a screw. These could easily be replaced. The carbide blade has a swivel head making it easy to reach most teeth. The wedge was very easy to use and most horses accepted it very well. The rope can be easily tied to the halter. Offered for auction is an exceptionally rare and well preserved example of an 18 th century Cheselden Eye Speculum Ophthalmology Surgery Set. History: William Cheselden(1688-1752) was an English anatomist and ophthalmologist. Best renowned for his invention of the artificial pupil. At the age of 15 Cheselden started his studies of medicine under the celebrated anatomist William Cowper(1666-1709) At the age of 23 he was already teaching anatomy as surgeon to St. Thomas' Hospital. Body physician to the Queen and fellow of the Academy of Surgery at Paris. His skill became well known worldwide. And numerous surgeons travelled to London to watch his operations. Cheselden published his work in several volumes. Including: The Anatomy of the Human ... moreBody(1713) Treatise on the High Operation for Stone(1723) and Osteography. Or Anatomy of the Bones(1733) However. Doubtlessly his most significant contribution was his introduction of the artificial pupil. An innovative operation which was published in Philosophical Transactions(1729) In an article entitled: An explication of the instruments used in a new operation on the eyes. An operation is shown where full recovery of blindness of a 13 year old boy was achieved after removal of the lenses rendered opaque by cataract from birth. In doing that, Cheselden introduced the iridotomy needle included in this set, and the method of using it shown in the figure in the last photo(not included, shown only for demonstration) The set: is housed in a nice wooden box coated with morocco red and black leather. Lined inside with white silk and gray-green silk velvet, with brass supports for the tools. The case is closed with two hook and eyes. This week. I have a very nice collection of early antique medical surgical tools from the Civil War Era and earlier, fresh out of a fine old estate of a local doctor. Be sure to see my other auctions! Up for auction is an antique 19th century Pilling Philadelphia medical or surgical instrument. Not sure of it's exact purpose. But my guess is some sort of dilator. It has an outer piece marked"Pilling Philadelphia" and"Sterling" an inner tube, and a third inner part with a pointed end. It is in very nice condition with normal signs of age.
