Fantastic Antique English Brain Surgery Kit Mahogany Handles c. 1750 Surgical NR
From my private collection I am selling a wonderful antique neurosurgical kit from the mid 18th century. It is English. Made by Dickinson and is ca. 1750. The kit is in the original red lined mahogany box and contains 8 instruments. All original. The only pieces missing are minor: a small scalpel and bone brush. These do turn up on ebay from time to time so the set can be completed if desired. Included in the set are chestnut handled trephines, lenticular, elevator, and other instruments. Also included is a rare maker's marked Samuel Sharp's forceps. This is an unusual instrument used to lift out the circular piece of bone created by the trephine bits. Some of the instruments have light to moderate surface rust which can be cleaned rather easily. I have not done this as I decided to leave this to the buyer, if desired. Deaver was a pioneering American abdominal surgeon who helped standardize the surgical removal of the enlarged appendix. This is a uterine dilator which was used to stretch the opening in the uterine cervix. At the time of use(around 1900) it was thought that a small opening could contribute to infertility. Therefore this was inserted and opened with a thumb screw to the desired diameter. Apparently it his not done for this purpose anymore. The instrument is about 12 inches long. Adam& Charles Black, Longman and Co George Ballingall qualified with the Licentiate Diploma of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in December 1805 and joined the Army Medical Department in May of the following year. Spending the majority of his army career in India. He also served in Java. Eventually he was awarded his MD Edinburgh degree in 1819, and the FRCS Edinburgh and Fellowship of the Royal Society of Edinburgh during the following year. He was appointed to the Regius Chair of Military Surgery in the University of Edinburgh in November 1822, succeeding John Thomson, its first holder, and he held this post until his death in December 1855. As recorded in the history of Tibetan Medicine. Tibetan surgery was banned during the eighth century after a failed heart operation on the Mother Queen of Tibet, and it gradually disappeared from the medical practice. Minor operations like eyes cataract, lungs and abdominal water drainage, and hemorrhoid operation are still practiced. This old surgical cutlery boxes contains seventeen different instruments. Which were used by Tibetan doctors in treating their patients. The age of the boxes is hard to determine however it seems it to be early 20th Century. The surgery tools are divided into five groups: 1. Probes 2. Forceps 3. Lancets 4. Stylets ... more5. Auxiliary instruments A wide variety of surgical instruments and techniques were invented in the Tibetan medicine. In particular. 83 surgical instruments were listed in the'Blue Beryll" Medical Thangka No. 34. These painting shows the surgical traditional instruments used in Tibetan medicine. There are three categories of performing therapy: mild, rough and rigorous. Mild therapy involves compresses, fomentation and massage. Rough therapy included bloodletting, moxibustion and minor surgery. Rigorous therapies consist of incision. Excision, scraping and extraction. Probes are used for exploring cranial bone fractures and excision of hemorrhoids. Probing instruments are round. Thin and smoothly polished for cranial exploration. For hemorrhoids there are a series of tubular probes[not included in this sets] with lateral openings for examination and incision. Forceps are used for extracting foreign bodies from muscle tissues and ligaments. Lancets are used mainly for incision into muscle tissue and for puncturing vessels to cause bleeding. They include the sparrow-feather-shaped lancet used the curved lancet. And the sickle-shaped lancet used to incise tongue swellings.

Up for bid is an antique medical book" An Epitome of Surgery" by D. Hayes Agnew. M.D. L.L.D. I couldn't find the publisher or date, but on the first page of the book, C.N. Wolfe wrote his name and the date Oct. 11, 1887. The cover has some wrinkles, but over all the book is good. This book came from the estate of Dr. Samuel J. Bucher. Dr. Bucher was born 4-13-19 at Wrightsville, Pa. He graduated from Goshen College and Temple University School of medicine. He moved to a little town( Harman, WV) in 1946 and practiced medicine there until his retirement in 1990. He delivered several thousand babies including his three grandsons. He made house calls to neighboring counties even delivering triplets at one home. I acquired his medical library when he passed. I will be listing other books as I haave a few hundred of them. The cap of each mushroom-shaped half was stitched to an intestinal opening and the stems were joined. Civil War vintage Field Surgery Leather Folding Case, NO RESERVE
This is a Civil War vintage Field Surgery Leather Folding Case. The case was used to hold medical instruments and supplies. This type of case is what would have been used by doctors in the mid 1800's and during the Civil War while treating wounded soldiers on the battlefield. The surgical case folds out and has three sections with leather loops for holding medical instruments. The case will hold 18 instruments and also has a pocket for holding paperwork plus a cork flip out pad for holding needles. All leather on the case is in good condition. No dry rotting or weak leather on the case body or instrument loops. The six leather flaps did have pockets on each end at one time but the ultra thin leather pocket covers have deteriorated away. This is a super nice looking case that could be used to display antique medical instruments. The front ... moreflap still buttons shut. M.D. 1893 Arpad Geyza Charles Gerster(1848– 1923) was a pioneer in aseptic surgery. This book was the first manual on the subject published in the United States. He was born in Kassa. Hungary in 1848. His first inclination was to become a sailor. But discouraged by his family he became interested in becoming a naturalist, and finally settled on medicine. He moved to Vienna in 1866 to study. Receiving his medical degree from the University of Vienna in 1872. From 1872– 1873 he served as a doctor in the Austro-Hungarian army. His tour of duty up he decided to emigrate to the United States. Before leaving for America he visited Volkmann’s clinic in Halle. In July of 1880 Dr. Gerster was appointed House Surgeon at Mount Sinai Hospital. In the operating room he was a pioneer in the use of aseptic and antiseptic methods.
