Well the best I can come up with is that this is an amputation knife or blade. Dont know what else to call it. It came with other medical instruments dating around 1900 or before. I would guess this would be civil war but.it does not have a wooden handle. The handle looks. Feels like plastic.probably Bakelite. The stamp on the blade says Emerig Phila The box says W.H. Walmsley The knife and box definitely go together.to the point that the knife only fits in one way. Can not be flipped vertically. Box is velvet lined. This Kit is very cool and comes with everything that was in the kit when I purchased it years ago. The kit comes with Seven Bottles with labels listed and some of them still have stuff ... morein them. They have cork tops and the small bottles fit perfectly in their spot in this kit as seen in the photos. Inside this kit were also some pretty cool extras. There is 2 Uniform buttons that appear to be from the area this kit was made. There is a large and small button and they have the American Bald Eagle on the front and are very cool. Also included are a clear larger bottle and some cloth. Small rusty blade and some type of paper. Also included with this kit is an Original Medical Scalpel from the Indian War as well. The scalpel did not come with the kit when I purchased it. But I am including it with this sale. This kit is so cool and is in great condition considering the age. You open up the case and it has the place to put the small bottles and then you lift up the little door and there is a place where the other items where stored. On the case above where the button is to snaps it says TRADE(R)MARK in gold. The kit is just under six inches long. 2½ inches wide and 3 inches high. The Scalpel is about 6 ½ inches long and has some wear and rust from being used in the war. But the scalpel is a cool example and goes nicely with this kit. I have take photos so

An original folding scalpel as used by surgeons in the 18th to 19th century. The 2" folding blade is encased in a 2-pc tortoise shell grip. The blade is mkd"Genol Paris' The grip has 1 brass rivet remaining. The other rivet is gone as the grip end is worm-eaten by age at one tip. A similar Reviolutionary war era folding scalpal is on exhibit at the Old State House, Boston. Old Surgical Scalpel knife- in"as found" uncleaned condition. NEAT old Surgeon's SCALPEL knife- both the tang and the top of the handle are marked: KOLBE. I believe it is a piece from a Surgeon's set- and may date back to the Civil War. There is some rust/ staining on the blade- and there is an age crack in the bottom of the handle.
