ANTIQUE MEDICAL FOLDING BISTOURY SCALPEL
This is a beautiful example of a folding pocket bistoury scalpel from the mid 1800's. Manufactured by Snowden. The side of the scalpel is sharp, but the scalpel tip is unusual in that it is curved back on itself so that there is no cutting with the tip. The instrument is 3 1/2" long folded and 6" extended. The handle is made of horn, and there is a flip opening tab similar to that of a folding razor. It is a very nice piece of surgical history that makes a fine presentation.

NICE ANTIQUE SURGICAL / MEDICAL TWEEZERS AND SHARP SCALPEL SCRAPING TOOL
Here we have two nice surgical instruments for your collection! The first one is some kind of curved sharp blade cutting or scraping instrument. It is probably nickle plated but definitely not stainless as there is a small rust spot on the blade. The other instrument is a unique 90 degree angle. Square tip, slide locking pair of tweezers. The locking bar on these goes to almost the tip and fits into a slot on the other tip. They have been well used as well and have very little finish left but still work great! THIS ITEM IS SOLD WITHOUT RESERVE Description This is for a fine quality late Victorian or Edwardian cased surgeons scalpel set made circa 1890-1910. Made in Germany by C. Stiefenhofer of Munich. These surgical instruments have been crafted from the best German steel which is held in place by brass pins in the elegant shaped ebony handles. The set has five scalpels of varying size along with a syringe and comes in its original manufacturers case. One can only imagine the service these instruments have seen in the years shortly after manufacture when the world went to war. A fascinating piece of medical history this is one of a number of interesting items I have listed this week and is being sold WITHOUT RESERVE and with a 99p start price. Here we have a very nice and hard to find. Small medical/ surgical probe for a pocket kit. It is used condition showing some staining on the handle part but the probe ends are perfect. It is maker marked"Hardy" which is a maker I am not familiar with. The other instrument is an ebony handle scalpel that has been shortened ether due to breakage of the wood or to fit in a smaller kit. There are no cracks or damage to whats left of the handle. There is an R and G in boxes marked on one side of the blade and what looks to be Hyledmann Germany on the other side. These would be great additions to your pocket kit or collection! At Massachusetts General Hospital on October 16th 1846 This one has the name LAUNDY stamped on the blade. The steel blade has some pitting and freckles due to age but is extremely sharp. It is securely fitted into the handle- no wobbles. The handle is made of some type of natural material. The original owner's initials TG are engraved at the end. I cannot see any cracks or splits. original c 1800 medical scalpel manufactured by joseph Rodgers of Sheffield England in very good plus antique condition. the scalpel has a very nice clean condition blade and a minty rosewood handle with no cracks or breaks. joseph Rodgers registered their mark of the star and cross in the year 1764 and at which time up until about 1780 exclusively made pocket knives. around this time 1780 the firm moved to no.6 Norfolk st. In Sheffield, England. around the year 1800 the firm started to make new products such as razors, table cutlery, scissors, and medical instruments.

The'bleeder' is marked"Gemrig" and the others are marked" Luer" on two the mark is clear but on the the club shaped lancet? all I can see is the letter L. Yet the blade edge is still quite sharp) SIZE: When closed. Two measure approx. 3-3/4" one is 3" and the bleeder is about 2" The case is approx. 4-3/4" x 2-1/4" CONDITION: Good condition with wear consistent with age. The blades on the two longer tools are sharp and in surprisingly good condition. The tool with the two straight knife blades has a lot of wear/nicks to edge of blades and the tip of the bleeder is worn. The ... morehandles have some little chips on the edge(I tried to show some of the worst in photos) but no cracks. Tooled leather case has quite a bit of wear and one side has come unattached but all the loops for holding the tools are still attached and work well. As you can see. There are empty slots so the set isn't complete. Interesting Note: Gemrig was a surgical instrument maker in Philadelphia from 1840-1881. They were a major supplier of surgical instruments to the Union Army during the Civil War. Up for auction is this antique Giant antique scalpel. 10 1/2 inches long. Blade is over 1 1/2 at the widest point, whopping 4,5 mm thick, weights in my opinion 1.6 pounds. Hemispherical shape cutting edge blade is of very best carbon steel of the time. One piece monolith handle is contoured with both finger and palm swells. Marked with A.S. ALOE co with their symbol underneath ALOE co is one of the oldest American company of Instruments from 1860. Written about in" THE MAKERS OF SURVEYING INSTRUMENTS IN AMERICA SINCE 1700. by CHARLES E SMART. Condition is excellent- other than 1 mm of the point missing. Darkening of the blade.
