Vintage BRIDDELL solid steel cleaver made in the USA. This piece is from a family estate that long ago owned an old general store in rural northern New Jersey. The cleaver was found wrapped in the original brown waxy paper. The wood handle is marked with the original long ago retail selling price of $3.50 in black grease pencil, The cleaver appears to have never been used. The buyer of this cleaver will only be the first owner following the general store proprietor. The solid steel cleaver is in near mint condition. Overall length is approximately 14 1/4" the blade 8" long and 4 3/4" at widest tapering to 3" The solid steel runs the length of the light stained wood handle secured by three brass colored rivets measures 6 1/2" long and 1" wide. Meat Cutting Butcher Slaughter Game Processing Equipment
I am the original owner of this meat cutting equipment that I have also used for game processing. The mesh apron is constructed of aluminum and does a great job of preventing cuts and stabs. The chain mail glove is stainless steel and is an extra large size which also does a great job of preventing cuts. The five meat hooks are stainless steel with red plastic handles. The one large meat hook is stainless and you would use a small strap to wrap around your wrist and hook at the base to steady it while in use. The two arm guards are plastic. The scabbard is aluminum and comes with a chain link belt to wear around your waist. I've used this equipment to process tons and tons of meat and game and it's ready for alot more of use. This is several hundreds of dollars worth of equipment so I'm setting a modest reserve.

My guess is that the blades will need to be replaced. There is just the start of fraying to the cord where the larger width piece meets the smaller width cord(picture 4) So you may consider replacement now or in the future. Cosmetically there are paint rubs, scratches, dings and other normal wear, plus some grease and dirt. The serial number is 13755 and it has the feel of a tool that was built to last. This beautifully preserved antique piece was something of a barn-sale find in the Italian countryside in Umbria at a time when that region was still very rural and legitimate bargains could still be found on antique knives and on primitives in general. It is half top-quality antique cutlery and half vernacular folk-art. Hand-made by a very talented craftsman. Perhaps even by the farmer who used it, it was expertly hand-forged with a thick, carbon steel blade that's shaped like a quail, and a handle shaped like its tail, or at least where its tail would be. Condition is superb, as you can plainly see in the photos. Its considerable collector value is nearly upstaged by the excellent performance one may still expect from it in use. Its shape makes it equally suitable for slicing and cutting meat as it is for your toughest cutting and chopping. ... moreFor the purpose of this sale we've had it professionally edged and it's now RAZOR sharp in a way that very few knives ever can be. Since this blade was hand-forged from carbon steel it can be very, very sharp, indeed! The quality of the steel used in it is excellent. One is marked Vom Cleff& Co with a 6½” long blade but full length of cleaver is approximately 11½” Second one has a name on it that starts with what looks like HAP- and ends in MANN. I cannot figure out the middle letters but underneath it says St. Louis. MO. This one is a little larger than the first one– with an 8” long blade, but full length of cleaver is approximately 15” long. Both are v ery sharp and in great vintage condition! I believe the company is Peck. Stow and Wilcox, sort of known for a wide range of tools, some pretty large and complex, but their cleavers are another matter, darn rare at best. This is beautifully crafted piece! I have not attempted to clean it or sharpen it. Although it retains an extremely sharp edge in my opinon. I measured the blade at approx. 10" it has bumps to the back from use, but ready to slaughter cattle, chop off horns or whatever, I do believe this was a professional model, but I could be wrong, don't think so though. Stamped on the blade.NO. 3.P.S. W. CO. BEST CAST STEEL" What is nicest, is the original handle, check the bolster and butt, both pro grade. Handle will turn approx. 1/16" and has nicks and dents associated with use, chips out of the butt end and one crack extending 1 1/4" The Peck, Stow& ... moreWilcox Co(P.S.
