This is a fascinating very old millinery form made of some combination material covered with cheesecloth. I have not been able to find another like it! The form under the cloth has a ridge cut into it that arches from low down on the sides to up(forehead height) in the front. Obviously this is to be able to measure and place the hat correctly for the face and head. The cheesecloth is secured to the form with straight pins all around the bottom. There are pins and a line drawn from front to back and another which goes from the center of one side to the other to mark the middle of the piece for placement of the hat or wig being made. Given that the form is not wood. It is perfect to be able to pin what you're making as you go along. The manufacturer's name is stamped on the front but covered with the thin cheesecloth so I couldn't ... moreread it without removing the pins and cloth- I didn't want to damage the piece. SCARCE 18 TH C. GREYHOUND-HEAD SLEIGH FORM PORCELAIN CONDIMENT STAND 3 CHAMBERS. We can’t pretend to be certain of two things: one is the date of manufacture. Our experience with porcelain(one of us has been a pottery and porcelain collector for many years) and our instincts tell us that the piece pre-dates the 19 th C. But we can’t offer proof, any more than we’re certain that it doesn’t pre-date the 18 th C. We’ve also uncertain of its function. We would have called it a breakfast set or stand. But there is a spoon-opening in the lid of the only chamber that’s shaped to hold a boiled egg, so we’re guessing that that’s a jam pot. That chamber is one of the two with greyhound-head finials. The other greyhound-head finial is on the lid-like top that’s all of a piece(not a detached“lid” with the receptacle that fits into the parallel egg-shape ... morechamber below. This dog-head receptacle has pierced holes around the dog head large enough to make us believe it’s a sugar shaker or even a pepper. But unlikely a salt. The open chamber at the back is likely an open salt. But this is all guesswork. Had considered the possibility of an inkstand. But again the spoon opening seems to rule that out. Approx. 5” x 4” x 4 ¼” and weighs 13.6 oz. Tracery of leaf-on-stem gold decoration and with edges also outlined in gold. Most of the gold is surprisingly vivid. But there are faded or rubbed areas. There’s one major defect: it’s obvious that the dog-head lid that fits onto what we take to be the jam pot has been damaged and repaired at some time in the past. The greyhound head itself seems untouched. But the curved shape of the lid it’s the finial of is clearly discolored and the texture isn’t as smooth as the rest of the white porcelain. There may also be a tiny insignificant nick to the rim of one chamber.
