Adorable Antique c1880 Intact English Bamboo Display or Plant Stand Xlnt Condit
Absolutely adorable authentic Victorian display stand(c 1880) in great condition. There are a couple of splits in the bamboo legs(see photo 4 and 8) but they are stable and not wobbly or coming un-done. This piece is probably English. Marked by the smoked tortoiseshell effect on the legs of real bamboo. There are a couple of things that make this piece quite remarkable: First. Its diminuative size. It stands 9 1/2" tall. The tabletop measures 10 3/8" x 9 1/2" Secondly, the fact that the woven and stenciled matting on the top of the stand are completely original and without blemish! More sophisticated pieces would have had a lacquered face to the top. But, we want to stress how unusual it it to find the more fragile matting material intact. And to have stenciling on it that hasn't been ruined by water damage makes this just ... morea great find! Being good stewards of beautiful household items from the past, we would emphasize the care you should exhibit with this delicious bit of Victoriana. Please don't plop a plant down on it that's going to leak all over it and ruin its beautiful state. A small vignette of objets d'art, a handsome bust or other decorative item sitting on display would be more suitable companions. If you might put candles on it, place a pretty piece of fabric on the matting that will match your decor and protect its surface. You'll notice in the second photo that the bamboo that trims the edge of the tabletop is a bit short at each end. Victorian Carved Etagere or Curio Display. Hand carved of solid walnut about 1860 during the Victorian period. This magnificent"Etagere" or curio display has an original arched mirror. The deep finish is excellent. A lower curved drawer has hand dovetailed joints. There are losses to the silvering on the mirror- if this is not charming, it can be resilvered.
