This auction is for a vintage Union Instrument Co. precision protractor. It is marked on the front"U.S. and one source suggests it might was made for the Army Corps of Engineers. Probably intended for use by draftsmen. It could readily be used for checking angles in the machine shop. In any case it is still an instrument that you would be pleased to own. This tool is in really nice condition. With no dings or staining. It appears to be made of stainless steel, although it has a softer hue like German silver. On the front it is Imprinted: U.S. 8, Union Instr. Corp Plainfield, N.J. There is a small glass or clear plastic eye in the center with cross hairs. The center mechanism rotates through 360 degrees. The outer scales go from 190 to 350 degrees in both directions and the vernier scale goes from 30 to 0 to 30 degrees. cavlon99 HOME 22" Rocket/Missle TailCone Split Ring Rotating Assembly Jig. 20 CATEGORIES for other items of interest. Currently over store items listed. 2402 We think this was used for assembly or maintenance on the tail-cones of modest size missiles or some sort of aircraft. The aluminum ring assemble rides on rollers so that it turns to any position. There are lock pins to hold in in specific locations. The ring assembly splits in half so it can be put around or removed from something that has obstructions at the ends. The contact blocks are tapered to fit the angle of the tailcone. The aluminum assembly is mounted to a steel stand that has wheels and a floor lock. I am told there is over 200 pounds of Aluminum in the top section. The image below is hard to read but gives directions for how this was used. The ring material is about ... morean inch thick. The ID of the rings is about 22 inches.
