Vintage US Navy OS-8G/U Oscilloscope Scope -- VERY CLEAN needs minor repairs
You are bidding on a super clean US Navy OS-8G/U oscilloscope in partial working order. The OS-8GU is the last(and in my opinion the best) of the series of OS-8 scopes built for the Navy in the 1950's and early 1960's. This little scope measures just 14 inches by 7 inches by 9 inches and weighs under 15 pounds. It comes in a solid aluminum case(last photo) with shock mounts inside(photo 1) The scope uses a 3RP1 CRT. But unlike the earlier versions the OS-8G/U is otherwise entirely solid state. It is simply beautifully constructed(photo 3) The side panels open with four screws to allow quick access to the inside for adjustment or repairs. Under a hinged back panel are jumpers that allow very versatile connections to the CRT deflection electrodes(photo 4) The controls are very well laid out(photo 2) This particular OS-8G/U is serial ... morenumber A542. Built by Philadelphia Scientific Controls for the Navy(photo 6) Cosmetically this one is in near mint condition(see photos) Hardly a mark on it. This scope generates a clear bright trace when fed by external signals. But there is something wrong with the horizontal amplifier circuit. As the horizontal position control is turned to move the trace from the left side of the screen to the right side, the trace first shrinks to zero width in the middle, then expands as a reflection on the right side of the center line. The built-in sweep is also not working, probably due to the same cause. The vertical amplifier is working perfectly. I've seen this kind of problem in other scopes, and it's not too hard to repair. I believe the manual for this scope can be found on the web, but I do not have one. If you are looking for a really well built small portable analog scope for servicing electronic equipment that doesn't require a high bandwidth. This is an excellent choice. Our Boy Scout Troop received a donation of an RCA Model WO-56A 7" Oscilloscope. It is fairly clean. And appears to work-that is it lights up when I plugged it in. A green spot appears and the controls seem to work. BUT-I don't know anything about oscilloscopes and can only say that it appears to work. Here are some basics on this model. I am guessing that the unit is complete. It appears as if a very quiet cooling fan was added to the rear of the item. I would prefer a pick up. Rather than shipping. This was from my brother's father-in-laws estate. He was a TV repairman. Handyman, tinkerer most of his 96 years. This was one of the tools of his work. It comes with the 4 cables that are(sort of) pictured that are connected to the 4 B&C connectors on the one picture, as well as a 5th cable that I found when going through his box of cables. Etc, that has a B&C connector on one end and an RCA connector on the other. This had been sitting on a shelf in his work shop at his home then later on a shelf at my brothers home for a number of years. When I powered it up. To test it, the power light came on but no sweep traces then I notice a wisp of smoke coming from ... moreit. Upon investigating I found a burned up resistor. Always fun because you can no longer read the color codes. I went on line and located the PDF copy of the schematics for it. I printed the 6 pages of the schematic out and taped it together to make one complete(will be included) At the close of the auction I will also e-mail the winning bidder the PDF file schematics for your records. I. Looking at the parts on the PCB and the schematic, figured out that it was a 68 ohm 1/2 watt resistor, part of the CRT 3 stage driver circuit. I replaced both the resistor and the 2N3053 transistor it was connected to(in case it is what made the resistor burn) $11.00 in parts. Heathkit was designed with the novice and learner in mind and each PCB has a different number in relation to each board and component. L101. Q321 etc. the 100's on PCB 1 and the 200's on PCB 2 etc. Makes it nice, because a lot of their devices were sold as kits(hence the name Heathkit) This oscilloscope is working(powers up with A and B traces) but is sold AS-IS because no further testing was done and due to age may have other issues.
