Early 1790s French Revolution Liberty-Cap dug 11mm cuff button with small shank
This 11mm cuff button was worn during the French Revolution. Before the rise to power of Napoleon Bonaparte. It is circa late 1780s, early 1790s. It was dug in France in woods and has that wonderful dark-green woods patina diggers just love. It has not been over-cleaned and I would recommend leaving it as-is. The shank is a strange single piece of wire that is bent over and brazened on. Can't say I've seen one like this. And I'm surprised the shank is still fully intact since it is not a well-designed style of shank compared to other French buttons I've seen. As soon as Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte took control. Pants, hat. The soldier was in Europe during the war, but the uniform could have been worn in the U.S. or in Europe… not sure. I’m not exactly certain of the size, but the Ike jacket from this soldier was a size 36R. The condition of the uniform is mixed. The shirt has patches, but has a stain near a front pocket as shown. There are 2 holes in the front, one is larger and shown. There are 2 holes in the back that are very small. The pants are in excellent condition. The only thing I saw was a seamstress patch to one of the pocket liners on the inside. The pants are button up… no zipper. The hat is in good shape with some wear on the red banded stitching ... moreand the inner band has separated slightly on the backside underneath. At quick glance all the German pebble grain buttons may look the same but these were the slightest bit different. If you look at a close picture of one used by the Heer. You'll see that you can actually make out the small circles(see picture#6) These have the same finish but with a"swirl" affect and indiscernible circles(picture#1) These were used during one period and one period ONLY 1933-1945. Unlike the German Heer(Army) of the same period where gold buttons were used for high ranking officers and silver for N.C.O.s, the color of the buttons in the NSDAP, SA& HJ/DJ were not used for rank but was a choice by each individual fraction in those parties. 1 piece aluminum, silver tone. 19mm.
