This button is from the mid-1790s and was made to celebrate the French Revolution. Which in reality was an enormously evil and perverse period of time. By the late 1790s. Napoleon Bonaparte did not like this style of button at all and forbid it, believing"liberty" left up to masses of uneducated peasants was nothing but anarchy and chaos(which it was/ still is- reminds me today of a certain country I know; spell this"amnesty" again, for illegal aliens) It shows on the face of the button the famous French cap of liberty that was so popular during the American Revolution of the 1770s; perhaps that idea actually came from our own Revolution which the French supported militarily. GETTYSBURG SHEAFFER FARM FIELD HOSPITAL A small section 1/2 inch of Confederate uniform cloth and a small flat brass button and percussion cap. Dug last year with other relics on the farm. The DANIEL SHEAFFER FARM remains a prominent Gettysburg landmark. The original property was a 300+ acre landgrant from Wm. Penn. First surveyed in 1763, and referred to as'Wolf's Walk' There was, at one time, an Indian camp on the property S.W. of where the house was later built. The house(the first brick house in Adams County) was built in approx. 1780-81. The original use of the house was as a tavern'under the Sign of George Washington' from 1808-1815. During this time the green in front of the house was used as a site of military musterings and drills. In the 1840's the house was used as a place for abolitionist meetings, and ... moreas a stop on the Underground Railway for slaves fleeing from neighboring Maryland, only a few miles away. At the time of the Battle of Gettysburg. The property was owned by Daniel Sheaffer and his wife and consisted of the brick house, several outbuildings and a sawmill located on White Run Creek. The land was occupied by a portion of the III and XII Corps, Army of the Potomac, with baggage trains resting in the fields. Gregg's Cavalry Division camped on the farm on July 2nd, and Reserve Artillery occupied the fields S.W. of the house. Nearly 3,000 Rebel prisoners, many taken during the famous'Pickett's Charge' were kept S.W. of the house, near the stream. When the wounded began to arrive. The Sheaffers were asked to leave. The surgeons performed amputations on every available surface, and the piles of severed limbs grew outside. Holes were drilled in the planking of the floors on the downstairs level so that the blood could be washed into the cellar. The most famous patient at the Sheaffer House Field Hospital was the controversial General Daniel Sickles. He had been wounded in the leg by a projectile. Smashing the bone. This Hubley Texan Jr. has a unique Push Button Release that stands it apart from other Texan Jrs. This type of release could be used for quicker action than other styles. The Sure-Shot is said to be unique. As well, in that it is not a model that is seen as often as some. Note that these details are only things that I have read about the items, which does not make them fact. One detail I am most certain of is that the holster did not come with either cap gun, although he Texan Jr. fits inside of it very well. The snap closure on the back of the holster is in good shape and should not have a problem opening or closing anytime soon. Whether these are bought to be collectables, or to be put to(PRETEND) use, they will not disappoint.
