Near Fredericksburg, Virginia, from Colonel Ludwell Lee to John Mercer in Washington, DC. Mercer has written to Lee, requesting an endorsement of his father's actions during the Revolution, and Lee obliges. Though a good bit of the letter is lacking and it is in fragile condition, fortunately the writing is clear and legible and a partial transcription of it can be inferred. Ludwell Lee(1760-1836) joined the Revolution in 1780. And was at Yorktown at the surrender of Cornwallis. He built Belmont Plantation. The highly prized maps in this atlas were engraved by The Matthews-Northrup Company of Buffalo, NY. The maps from The Century Atlas are acknowledged to be among the finest of the late 19th century. The map was published in a reference atlas by George F. Cram. New York 1909. This colorful map features abundant details of railroad lines, cities, counties etc. An interesting historical piece which offers a fascinating perspective of areas which have since undergone significant growth and change. On thick paper where printed area measures 13" x 20" with ample margins for framing. Condition very good with very mild age toning. Also faint water stains in lower left and lower right margins, doesn't effect printed area. Centerfold as published.
