SUPERIOR POWERSTAT 116-U VARIABLE TRANSFORMER VARIAC W/ METERS IN CABINET VGC
Superior Electric Powerstat variable transformer also known as an autotransformer and commonly called a"variac" Model 116-U. Rated 7.5 Amp 1Kva. This item came from a surplus equipment sale. It looks to me to be"homebrew" in origin using quality 50's-60's era components. Function-wise it works fine. All the components work as they should and the wiring is in good shape. The ammeter and voltmeter are Triplett Model 337-S 3" square versions. Voltage reads 0-150 VAC. Ammeter reads 0-5 Amp AC. Both of these are in the output circuit. Note the transformer is rated 7.5 amp but the meters are 5 amp. This instrument is enclosed in a metal, slant front cabinet. The top is hinged and will open to expose the components and wiring- see the photo. Finish is showing wear typical of it's age, but still in pretty good ... moreshape. The variable transfomer is wired for(2) inputs. A"115" input that will produce a 1:1 maximum output, i.e. 115 volts in produces a maximum of 115 volts out. The"135" volt input will produce a maximum of 135 volts out for a 115 volt input. In other words using the"135" input you can produce about 20 more volts output than your input voltage- in most cases your line voltage. Input is selected by plugging the power cord into either the"115" or"135" socket on the back and placing the rear toggle switch on top of the cabinet in the proper position. See the photo. Fuse protection is by way of an Elmenco fused plug on the power cord. The other toggle switch switches the ammeter in and out of the circuit. On the back panel are 4 pin and 6 pin"antique radio type" tube sockets. There are no connections to the 4 pin. The 6 pin has several connections to different points in the circuit- I'm not sure what the intention was for these- possibly for remote voltage monitoring? Superior Electric Powerstat 116U 0-140 volt 7-1/2 amp Variac
This is an used Powerstat 116U variac(variable transformer-but note variacs are not isolation transformers) made by Superior Electric that was intended for back panel mounting. It is designed for 120 volt 50/60 cycle input and the output can be continuously selected to be 0-140 volt output with max 7-1/2 amps. It can be configured in a variety of ways. But I only tested it using 120 volt input to terminals 4&5 and output from terminals 4&3, and the unit worked as expected. It is is good condition, but there are a couple of minor scraps on the winding but they did not seem to affect the unit's operation. Included are an used adjusting knob and an Ohmite 5006 indication dial(either 0-120 or 0-140 range) both in good condition other than a few minor scratches, scraps and scuffs. This is a high voltage instrument with exposed wiring ... moreso the buyer assume responsibility for its safe use and operation. The unit weighs just under 9 pounds but it fits in a medium-flat-rate box so shipping is economical.

Up for auction is this used Superior Electric variable transformer or powerstat. Type 200-CM. 10 amp outlet, on/off switch works but needs replaced. The unit shows alot use, you can't read the dial anymore and the adjustment knob has writing and engraving on it but operates fine with no humming and no dead spots. This is a MOTORIZED! Superior Electric 60MC126U Powerstat in great condition. It has built in limit switches to adjust the maximum and minimum output. Presently they are set for full limits in each direction. This unit is controlled by placing 120 V onto the specific contacts. To control the unit you place the neutral from a 120 V line on terminal one. And apply the 120 V hot wire to terminal 2 or 3 depending on which direction you wish to go. If it has reached it's end of travel as set by the cams which trigger the limit switches, it will only move in the reverse direction. This has been cleaned, reconditioned, and lubricated. While it was being reconditioned I removed the rotor and took pictures so you can see how clean this unit really is. This is really an important thing to see on these because it will show any wear. I recognize this as a type of variac. But know nothing else about it. Has been sitting around in a dusty environment for years and is dusty and dirty. I do not know how to test it, but the shaft does turn freely and smoothly. I see that the windings just to the left of the bare area, in the vicinity of terminal 4, are a slightly darker color. I have tried to show this in the pictures. No knob or dial. The brown plastic/bakelite around the shaft is chipped or chewed up. The applied decal with hookup instructions is chipped and not intact. What I have here is a DMY5000-3E-B 15.000 watt light control dimmer. It is made by Superior Electric Company. It includes 3 D5000B Luxtrol 5000 watt dimmers for a total wattage of 15KW. They are all three connected to a single control motor which brightens and dims all 3 dimmers simultaneously. Each dimmer is rated at 120volts and 41.6 amps. So in essence, you could control 150 100watt light bulbs. I have fully tested this unit and it works flawlessly. All you need to control this unit is a SPDT switch or a momentary up and down switch. The unit does not include the lights or all the wiring that is connected to it. I just temporarily hooked it up to make sure it worked properly. All voltage measurements taken between the different dimmers were always within.5 volts of each other so it is timed pretty well. It has two sections, each one rated at 22 amps/ 3.2 kVA at 120V in and 0-140V out at 50/60hz. Please see the photos for physical condition of this item. A local guy has offered $250 + with local pickup I could skip building a crate, but again I'm holding out for $300 each. Originally part of a stack. Weighs about 90 lbs and fits in crate 18 x 18 x 10 Shipping within the USA at actual cost + $50 for me to build the crate- I don't make any money on that and as you know eBay will charge me 10% of whatever the shipping cost is. Vintage Superior electric power stat variac in good working condition USED
I have for auction this vintage power state. It has the initials SE. And I believe it is superior electric. There isn't a lot of information printed or stamped on this item. I took pictures from all sides. There is a patent sticker on the side indicating roughly the age being around 1970 +. It is in working condition. I tested it on a lamp and on my stereo. The exterior isn't in too bad of condition. There are some scratches dents and dings. The electric cord has a split in the outer casing; but none of the internal wires are exposed. So no fear of shorts or shocks. If you need one here is a decent one at a fraction of the going rate. Please see pictures for condition. ask questions and any information will be appreciated.
