Radio receivers, and jukebox amplifiers. I suggest fusing it at 3 Amps to protect it and anything connected to it.

Up for auction is a 0-140vac Powerstat Variac made in the USA by the Superior Electric Co. Bristol, Conn. This item came from the San Diego City College by way of a legitimate auction. As can be seen clearly in the pictures this device is in excellent condition having no ugly dents, scratches or rust in either the front cover or the tinwork and the power cord is undamaged also. In fact it doesn’t look like it was used much at all. Apart from a couple of stickers the only defect is that the ID number C02109 has been etched faintly on the front cover. I connected my DVM to the transformer to show you both the low and high outputs. As this is quite a heavy item by far the best and most efficient way to ship is by way of USPS Priority Mail Medium Fixed Price Box. SUPERIOR POWERSTAT 116-U VARIABLE TRANSFORMER VARIAC W/ METERS IN CABINET VGC
Superior Electric Powerstat variable transformer also known as an autotransformer and commonly called a"variac" Model 116-U. Rated 7.5 Amp 1Kva. This item came from a surplus equipment sale. It looks to me to be"homebrew" in origin using quality 50's-60's era components. Function-wise it works fine. All the components work as they should and the wiring is in good shape. The ammeter and voltmeter are Triplett Model 337-S 3" square versions. Voltage reads 0-150 VAC. Ammeter reads 0-5 Amp AC. Both of these are in the output circuit. Note the transformer is rated 7.5 amp but the meters are 5 amp. This instrument is enclosed in a metal, slant front cabinet. The top is hinged and will open to expose the components and wiring- see the photo. Finish is showing wear typical of it's age, but still in pretty good ... moreshape. The variable transfomer is wired for(2) inputs. A"115" input that will produce a 1:1 maximum output, i.e. 115 volts in produces a maximum of 115 volts out. The"135" volt input will produce a maximum of 135 volts out for a 115 volt input. In other words using the"135" input you can produce about 20 more volts output than your input voltage- in most cases your line voltage. Input is selected by plugging the power cord into either the"115" or"135" socket on the back and placing the rear toggle switch on top of the cabinet in the proper position. See the photo. Fuse protection is by way of an Elmenco fused plug on the power cord. The other toggle switch switches the ammeter in and out of the circuit. On the back panel are 4 pin and 6 pin"antique radio type" tube sockets. There are no connections to the 4 pin. The 6 pin has several connections to different points in the circuit- I'm not sure what the intention was for these- possibly for remote voltage monitoring? Good used Powerstat type 136BU variable autotransformer. This comes out of a college professor's estate and was used occasionally for teaching/ testing purposes only. This has been tested by an electrician and tested good. Some of the testing is shown in pictures. 120v input and output is 0 to 140v. Has 2 direct voltage terminals. 1 low and 1 high and the variable voltage terminal, all checked out good. The mounting holes are spaced at 6" apart in a square pattern, weighs a little over 21 lbs. Superior Electric Powerstat 116U 0-140 volt 7-1/2 amp Variac
This is an used Powerstat 116U variac(variable transformer-but note variacs are not isolation transformers) made by Superior Electric that was intended for back panel mounting. It is designed for 120 volt 50/60 cycle input and the output can be continuously selected to be 0-140 volt output with max 7-1/2 amps. It can be configured in a variety of ways. But I only tested it using 120 volt input to terminals 4&5 and output from terminals 4&3, and the unit worked as expected. It is is good condition, but there are a couple of minor scraps on the winding but they did not seem to affect the unit's operation. Included are an used adjusting knob and an Ohmite 5006 indication dial(either 0-120 or 0-140 range) both in good condition other than a few minor scratches, scraps and scuffs. This is a high voltage instrument with exposed wiring ... moreso the buyer assume responsibility for its safe use and operation. The unit weighs just under 9 pounds but it fits in a medium-flat-rate box so shipping is economical.

This is a MOTORIZED! Superior Electric 60MC126U Powerstat in great condition. It has built in limit switches to adjust the maximum and minimum output. Presently they are set for full limits in each direction. This unit is controlled by placing 120 V onto the specific contacts. To control the unit you place the neutral from a 120 V line on terminal one. And apply the 120 V hot wire to terminal 2 or 3 depending on which direction you wish to go. If it has reached it's end of travel as set by the cams which trigger the limit switches, it will only move in the reverse direction. This has been cleaned, reconditioned, and lubricated. While it was being reconditioned I removed the rotor and took pictures so you can see how clean this unit really is. This is really an important thing to see on these because it will show any wear.
