1960 Vintage General Radio 1360-A 1.7GHz-4.1GHz Klystron Microwave Oscillator
General Radio Microwave Test Oscillator- working The 1360-A is a two-band microwave oscillator suitable for general test and development use. The low band covers 1.7- 2.8 GHz; the high band is 2.6- 4.1GHz. Nominal output is 100mW(20dBm) over both bands. Output varies considerably over frequency(the manual says 20 to 300mW) And I have no way of measuring the actual output power. I have verified operation across both bands. The ON/OFF switch handle is broken. So the switch is always ON. Other panel controls are: main frequency tuning, fine tunng,sweeep amplitude(for FM mode) output level, meter sensitivity, and an 8-position rotary mode switch. All controls work.The panel meter gives a relative output level. There are bana jacks for ground, external modulation in, and sync out. The main tuning dial is a bit loose in operation. One tunes down ... morethrough the lower band. Indicated by the red light to the left, then into the high band, at which point the red light goes out and the white one comes on. Output is via a General Radio 874-type"hermaphroditic" connector. Adapters for these to more usual types. Such as BNC, may be found on Ebay and elsewhere. The photos show the oscillator in various aspects. In addition. The two oscilloscope photos show the detected output under internal(1KHz) and external(400Hz) square wave amplitude modulation. The spectrum analyzer photos show the output under internal 1KHz FM and external 400Hz FM modulation. The frequency in all cases is 1.7GHz. All tubes have been checked and tested"good" The tube complement is: 5651 85V voltage reference 5965(similar to 12AT7) 6197(2) similar to 6CL6) 12AT7(2) 12AX7A 12BH7A 6AN8. 6AV5G. 5836 klystron oscillator. Here is a phase locked"brick" type oscillator. Made by Csalifornia Microwave, model number 467961-PS, tunes 5.75-6.5 GHz, TNC female output, uses an internal crystal or an external oscillator in the 100 MHz region at 3 dBm power as the reference. This is a standard microwave PLO brick design and was used in the C band microwave point to point links. DC power is-20 volts. This unit has the internal controlled crystal oven. It is no problem to couple an external reference in to one of the crystal oscillator pins via a.01 uF cap so you can use one of these new, cheap tuneable references! I checked this for operation and found it to have X60 multiplication factor, 100 MHz in the reference crystal socket gave 6.000 GHz output at +10 dBm. No crystal, have to get your own or inject from external oscillator(like SiLabs Synth! Used good ... morecondition, shopworn, but works fine. Have fun.
