India pattern clinometer survey ing tool made by UIC for the British Government(probably the War Department) It was used to measure the elevation or declination of buildings and topographical features. Mounted on a plane table and levelled using the screw behind the back sight. The aperture in the foresight can be raised or lowered with the thumb wheel until the cross wire coincides with the top of the feature being measured. There is a degree scale(to the left) and a tangent scale(to the right) on the front sight which enable the height to be calculated or found from tables if the horizontal distance is known. Stamped on the bar: Cooke Troughton and Simms London& York A706 Mk VI 1932 This one probably dates from the 1940s. The case is marked F.Ltd MkVI and numbered 115 under the broad arrow. The instrument is stamped with the UIC trade ... moremark. B 8300(probably a catalogue number) and the broad(army) arrow. This type of clinometer was originally designed for the survey of India in the 19th century, hence its name. The condition of the brass tool is excellent as it has been well treated and looked after. I have had this for 30 years and each year the item has been che cked. Waxed he leather etc. the brass has not been polished so has some patina. There is no wear or slop on the winding mechanism. The gears are spot on. The bubble level is undamaged. There is some wear on one of the hand stitched buckles and on the inside of the case especially where the tool fits in. See pictures. The leather is in excellent condition as is the stitch work except where mentioned already. I have never seen such fine leather stit ch ing elswhere- I would have trouble sewing this fine in fabric let alone in leather. These do not often come up for auction. A spe cialist military dealer I spoke to had never handled one, so grab yourself a bargain and a piece of history Postage is not cheap as the item is over 1.2 kg before packing and it will need insurance as well especially for sending overseas. This one here is not exactly like the one we found. This one had a handle that looks like it would move it position on the rod?
