IT consists of a Motor/ Dynamo with Reversing Capability, a Rheostat Speed Control, and A Gear Reduction Drive unit. The motor is marked KNAPP GIANT EXTRA No. 480 VOLTS 2-4. The Rheostat is marked KNAPP RHE-O-STAT, No 426 VOLTS 2-4. The Reduction unit is marked KNAPP REDUCTO. All 3 are mounted on a factory supplied Red painted board with intergal under wiring connecting the Motor to the Rheostat. It has a Plaque marked KNAPP No. 465 MUL-T-SPEED. There are two extra drive pully conveniently mounted to the board between the uints. The board is 4 3/4 x 14 inches. It comes in the original box. Shopworn from years of handling missing a cardboard chip on one end. It has an original end flap and top paper ... morelabel. Condition It is in superb original condition with original paint. The 3 units themselves area about 98 percent mint. The metal bases base minor high point edge patina from rubs on the end pieces. The center panel is real clean. There are 2 replaced mounting screws and two missing unit to base screws. Two extra pulleys for reduction are mounted to the board. The board has original red stain with some patina of age. Ohmite Rheostat. 2500 Ohm, 0.3A, Model P, 720W plus two heavy-duty switches This rheotstat has been sitting in my garage for a long time and was once part of a vacuum-tube Tesla-coil project that never got off the ground. It tests fine on my meter. Includes mounting hardware. The knob I used to have for this is one of these which looks and works great with this rheostat. The switches are heavy-duty with bakelite body rated at 1HP 250V DC; 1.5HP 250V AC; 10A@ 250V; 15A@ 125V. Locking nut and on/off bezel included. These three items need to be cleaned up a little. P 4 Rare WIRT ELECTRIC CO Rheostat Except for a large number of patents. Even the might Internet provides almost no information about Charles Wirt nor the Wirt Electrical Co of Philadelphia. A pioneer in the earliest days of electrical developement. Between 1891 and 1908 there are more than 20 patents assigned to the Wirt Co, mostly for rheostat design. Many of those in the 1900s are for lamp socket rheostats, those in the 1890s are for circuit rheostats like this one. The majority of these are from Charles Wirt himself, the rest from 2 other employees. This undated, but patented, rheostat has the appearance of being very early. The cast iron disc is 11" in diameter and is 1 1/4" thick. The lever is 9 1/2" and moves the central rotator smoothly around the copper terminals. I particularly like the"leaf spring" design ... moreto the ends of the traveling connector, shown in the next to last photo. The last photo is just one of Wirt's patents. Vintage Antique Cutler-Hammer Dual Rheostat/ Power Switch/ Regulator 220 Volts. 7.8 Amps, 89 Ohms, 1800 Watts This assembly came out of a poultry operation that ran from early 1920's until late 1940's. There was a gas engine and a generator that was part of the system. Both scrapped in the 1970's. Rheostat is not operational in current condition it is for parts. Restoration, art project or general industrial décor. When I disassembled for cleaning. I found the Bakelite linkage wafers has been wired or taped together. One fell apart and the other would soon if handle was used. So, I held them out when reassembling. One was behind switch handle and the other between the two drums. Drum diameter is 15-1/2" Handle length 13" Depth of two drums from flat surface to handle center peak 6-1/4" This assembly was mounted ... moreto barn wall with lags and 1/2" pipe nipple spacers.
