5 - Dug Civil War Spencer Rifle Casings Found in Sequatchie Valley, Tennessee
Description: Relics from Confederate General Joe Wheeler's Raid on Union Supply Train- 1863 Here's are five(5) original Spencer Rifle bullet casings found in the Sequatchie Valley near Chattanooga. Tennessee. These casings are part of the remains of a Union supply train heading to Chattanooga in early October 1863 following the Battle of Chickamauga, Georgia when the Union forces were defeated and fell back into Chattanooga only to be encircled by the Confederate Army and besieged. The Union forces were soon starving and munitions running low so the US command attempted to get supplies through to them from their supply base in Bridgeport, Alabama via a winding wagon road up the valley and over Walden's Ridge into Chattanooga. This supply train, consisting of nearly 1000 wagons and several miles long, was attacked halfway through ... morethe journey by Confederate cavalry under the command of General Joseph Wheeler. The supply train was destroyed with only some wagons on each end getting away. Roughly 700 or so were destroyed with mules being sabered and wagons being burned. These casings, which some show signs of the fire that destroyed the wagon they were on, were part of the supplies destroyed that day. You can see that many burst at the sides as the fire caused the powder inside to explode. I personally found these while metal detecting about twenty years ago. They are a neat set of relics from the American Civil War. Condition: The casings are brass and all show signs of damage from either the fire that destroyed that particular wagon or being under ground for over a century. Vintage WW2 Trench Art C-46 Comando mounted on Shell Casings
As you can see from the photos. This is a very nice piece of wartime Americana. The cast metal C-46 cargo airplane is mounted on a 50 calibre machine gun bullet that in turn is mounted to a 3" K7-MOD 1 anti-aircraft cannon shell base. The base is well marked and dated 10-1944. So, everything is WWII vintage, but here's the rest of the story. I bought the C-46 model by itself, it layed around my office for a year or two, when I decided to build a stand for it. Now, it had to be a'period stand' so I took the cannon base and a 50 caliber machine gun round and went out into my shop to put them together. I wanted to pin the base to the 50 caliber round for strength, so I set up my drill press and carefully drilled a mounting hole through the cannon round(it had been fired) Likewise, I then took the'fired' 50 calibre shell, ... moreremoved the projectile, put the casing upside down, and began drilling into the primer(it had obviously been fired because the primer was'hit' and dented) Well, I say'obviously' because that was my assumption. I centered the drill bit and began to carefully apply drill bit pressure. Well it didn't take long for the'fired primer' to let me know it was still alive because it went off with a tremendous'BANG' Well at a time like that I recall saying something like, Holy Sh* Needless to say it got my wife's attention because she came into the garage ashen faced holding the cell phone in preparation to calling 911. Only thing damaged was my hearing and that was restored in a few minutes. So, why am I sharing this story? Don't know other than it made an impression on me and thought you'd enjoy it, too. The benefit is that now I can say with great certainty that the stand is completely inert in that I've already detonated it. The model and stand are really very nice. 1920's/30's FERRANTI AF3, AF4, AF5 Transformer casings
these may be of interest to someone refurbishing Ferranti transformers- they are all in pretty good cosmetic condition with an occasional rust spot or flake of paint missing. There are 2 AF4 casings(centre and right hand side and different versions) and an AF3 on the left. There is also an AF5 which is not shown and not quite so nice but I will add that in for free. Seems a shame to dump them all when they might help someone out. If bidding on more than one item. Rare WWII USN Trench Art This came off of the USS Missouri that was launched January 29. 1944 and known as"Mighty Mo" or"Big Mo" and has 11 battle stars. It was the last battleship built by the United States and is best known as the site where General of the Army Douglas MacArthur, on 2 September 1945, officially accepted the surrender of Japan, ending World War II. The USS Missouri is open for visitors in Pearl Harbor. Working lamp is made from artillery shell casings. The heavy base measures 4-3/4" in diameter.and is about 2-14" tall. The brass casing that hold the bulb socket stands approximately 9" above the base top. A pull chain allows the one-way switch to be turned on and off. This is a pair of vintage trench art salt and pepper shakers that have been engraved"Fort Leavenworth" The style of lettering would indicate these were made during the WWI era. Each measures 3-1/2" tall and 1-3/8" in diameter. One is in great vintage condition with a lid that fits tightly and screws on and off easily.
