It was made in the late years of the 19th Century by W. Avery of Redditch. England. I have labelled the photograph of the needlecase as being made of brass. I am not sure now since I have cleaned it and it appears to be gold plated copper. But this is a guess. The first photo is of the cleaned case. By sliding the front panel off one can select the crochet hook required and flip it up and out of the case. Then sliding the panel back secures the hook for use. These hooks are so small they are difficult to see. I can't imagine crocheting with them! The case is beautifully decorated on both sides and is without ... moredamage. Style#5261, the older says White mailing labels, laser, 1" x 4" 20 labels to a sheet, has 14 sheets. 8366 says white filing labels, 1/3 cut, laser or ink jet 30 labels per sheet, has 17 sheets, says stick and stay. 5267 white return address labels, laser, 1/2 x 1 3/4, 80 per sheet, 10 sheets. 5354 white address labels 1 x 2 13/16 copier, 33 per sheet, 21 sheets. 8162 1 1/3 x 4" ink jet, quick drying, 14 per sheet, 20 sheets. 5375, addres labels for typewriters is just a collection of cut and partial sheets. one envelope didn't have any sheets in it, and i didn't go back and re-take the pictures, so there are only six envelopes with labels. Antique Rand & Avery Co. Gun cabinet
This unique roll-top(or roll-front. To be more exact) gun cabinet originates from the Rand, Avery& Co. printing house in Boston, MA. The printing house handled sequentially-numbered railway tickets for the Boston& Maine railroad for years. A fire in 1872 caused the relocation, and this piece probably dates from the period 1872-1889, when the Rand, Avery& Co. was finally auctioned. As clearly seen in the pictures. The following aspects will need to be restored: 1. Top shelf(barrel rack) is broken. But can be restored. 2. Top vertical roll-up panel(front) is intact. But moves up and down with some resistance, probably due to the back panel being bowed in. Can be restored without much difficulty. 3. Back panel is bowed in(possibly from water damage? and out of the rabbeted grooves. I have not forced it back because a full resotoration ... morewould require removing one side and regluing the panel into its tracks. 4. Top finial(center) is missing a chipped out section. Would need minor reshaping to retain original design symmetry. Aside from these three areas which need restoration. The gun cabinet is fully functional and intact. The bottom roll-up functions smoothly without effort. Can be used"as is" or restored for a perfected finish and function. Overall dimensions are 53" tall. 21" wide, and 13" deep at the deepest dimension. The following interested newspaper accounts detail the fire of 1872. And subsequent auction of the company. Boston Daily Globe. 21 Nov 1872: For the third time within ten days[The Great Boston Fire occurred on 8 Nov 1872] the citizens of Boston had their fears excited last evening by the prospect of an extensive conflagration. The building which was thus visited by the destructive element was the extensive printing establishment of Rand. Avery& Co. on Cornhill, at the foot of Washington street. This is a heavy watch weighing 4 ounces. WATCH DETAILS CASE: This double hunter heavy silver case has 4 hinged covers. Front, back, inner dust cover and the bezel cover. All hinges are tight. The inside front, back and dust cover have matching numbers. The front and back covers are signed No.1 Warranted Coin Silver. The case is in excellent condition.
