In 1833 David Sharpe and his son Joseph and J.R. Brown started the famous machine company. In 1853. Lucian Sharpe joined to make it the Brown& Sharpe Mfg. Co. They made cotton machinery and clocks etc. and this micrometer. They both went to the Paris Exposition in 1867 and were inspired to make micrometers. Etc. and now make several hundred different styles and sizes. This item is an old Brown and Sharpe Micrometer Caliper. It was made with hardened tool steel. It enabled the user to measure by the thousandth of an inch from 0" to 1" This one has the cut out frame. I'm not sure of the age of these. But a like micrometer originally sold for around $11.00 in 1938 and now, new, sell for $179-$250. Again, these are some of the best precision micrometers used by craftsmen all over the world. They are the most popular micrometers used by skilled craftsmen worldwide. This item is an old No. 436 Starrett Micrometer Caliper. It was made with hardened tool steel.
