Although a pair of these sphere magnets only touch on a point most folks cannot pull them apart with bare hands unless spacers are between. This auction is for 2 pieces of pyrolytic graphite with the following dimensions: 251" x.250" x.034" 250" x.244" x.020" These pieces come packed in a small wooden box. The picture shown is not of the actual pieces in this auction but the pieces included in this acution are similar. This auction does NOT include any magnets or steel plate. To demonstrate levitation with these pieces of graphite. You will need an array of four or more 1/4" or larger NdFeB magnets with a strength of N42 or stronger. A steel plate is not necessary but helps keep the magnets in the proper orientation. Pyrolytic graphite has the property that it is the most diamagnetic substance having a diamagnetic constant of 450 x 10-6 as compared to bismuth with the second highest constant of 170 x 10-6. A diamagnetic substance repels all ... moremagnetic fields and pyrolytic graphite is also light enough that it will float over a strong magnetic field. I've tried to float a.002" thick piece of bismuth foil and it is simply too heavy. Pyrolytic graphite is a synthetic material made by chemical vapor deposition. Methane gas at low temperature is heated to 2000 degrees Celsius. Layer upon layer is deposited at a rate of 1/1000" per hour. The layers of carbon atoms form crystals of hexogonal sheets. NdFeB magnets will not loose their strength if they are not heated and pyrolytic graphite is an extremely stable and inert substance. This means that the pyrolytic graphite will levitate forever. This is sort of perpetual un-motion. This perfect state of balance is truely inspiring to see.
