Working WIN LABS SDT-10.2 STRAIN GAUGE Phono Cartridge System with Power Source
This listing is for a very rare Win Laboratories SDT-10.2 strain gauge phono cartridge system. It includes the Win SDT-10.2 strain gauge cartridge itself. Plus the Win Laboratories"Source Module" that is needed to power it. The"Source Module" has some minor marks and scratches on the outer case. But is otherwise in good condition. The entire system is fully functional. And sounds absolutely great. When I acquired the cartridge a few months ago. I did not have a power supply for it. At that time, I was corresponding with Dr. Sao Z. Win about some other strain gauge cartridges that I own. Dr. Win, the inventor of the strain gauge phono cartridge technology, kindly offered to have me ship the SDT-10.2 cartridge to him, so that he could match it with an appropriate power supply. The"Source Module" included here is ... morethe one that Dr. Win matched to this particular SDT-10.2 cartridge. If you are familiar with the highly-regarded Panasonics and Technics EPC strain gauge cartridges. Then you may already know that it was Dr. Win who licensed the strain gauge cartridge technology to Matsushita to produce them. Matsushita wanted to use strain gauge cartridges for their CD-4 quadraphonic LP playback systems because the extended high frequency response(up to 45 kHz) Made them ideal for reproducing the ultrasonic"carrier signal" that was used to encode the rear channels. Win Laboratories continued to produce their own strain gauge cartridges. Like the SDT-10.2 that is for sale here, for stereo playback. The Source Module power supply is designed to operate off standard U.S. power(115 volt AC) It provides the necessary bias voltage for the SDT-10.2 cartridge. The back of the power supply has a trimpot located directly under the grounding post that is used to adjust left-to-right channel balance. Selling a very good condition Panasonic/ Technics EPC 451 Strain Gauge cartridge. I used to own several of these as backup to my Electro Research EK 1 preamp. This particular piece of used for a couple of time. Each time only for an hour or so. Last test 2 months ago and it sounded fantastic. The stylus is original Panasonic that have the white dot. It is the actual stylus that comes with the cartridge. The cartridge sold by Electro Research does not come in the factory box except for the plastic protector. It seems like strain gauge cartridge bodies. Demodulators and styli usually appear on eBay as individual pieces, with no way for the seller to guarantee that the item works correctly. I put this system together from three individual sources. But I have tested the resulting combination and can tell you that everything works great. With this Panasonic EPC-451C/SE-405 system you can experience the amazing sound quality of"strain gauge" phono reproduction for just a small fraction of what you would need to spend to buy a Soundsmith strain gauge system. Soundsmith is the only company that currently produces strain gauge phono cartridges. And their cartridge/preamp ... moresystems cost between $7,500 and $15,000. Soundsmith's founder. Peter Ledermann, was previously the Design/Production Engineer of RAM Audio Systems, which sold a strain gauge phono system that included an EPC-451C cartridge like the one for sale here, along with a preamp/power source of their own design. THIS AUCTION IS FOR A VERY RARE 1920's BERRY STRAIN GAUGE IN ITS ORIGINAL CASE.THE BERRY SRAIN GAUGE WAS USED IN THE HARVARD GRATUATE SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING IN THE 1920's,THE ONLY OTHER ONE THAT I KNOW OF IS IN THE COLLECTION OF HISTORICAL SCIENTIFIC INSTURMENTS AT HARVARD UNIVERCITY. Mechanical strain gauge; measures the deformation of the surface of a structure when force is applied. The instrument magnifies the object's motion by means of a lever. One of the contact pointers is fixed on the bar. The other fixed to a bell-crank lever that pivots on a dowel at the same end of the arm. The other end of the lever pushes on a metal rod that connects to a dial. Two metal points would be inserted into the holes on either side of the laying-off punch(square metal bar) and used to prick markings into the surface to be measured.
