An updated version of the traditional Scottish luckenbooth- given as a wedding gift. Then used as a protective charm on the shawl of the first baby. The intertwined hearts are asymmetric. With excellent use of negative space at the centre. The brooch is 1 3/8 inches tall and the same across. It fastens with a short straight pin and secure rolling clasp. It has a warm overall patina with minor surface scratches. Appropriate to its age. This design was first produced in the 60s by John Hart. Who was active on Iona and with Celtic Art Industries from the 1950s. His son has carried on the tradition through his company Hebridean Jewellery. The back of the brooch is stamped with the company's HJ monogram and clear Edinburgh hallmarks for 1984. This auction is for a USED thin type jacket patch that says HART VAN HOFTEN NELSON CRIPPEN SCOBEE. The patch is shaped round and has the space shuttle Challenger mission. The patch has blue red black white background with white lettering. The patch measures about 3" diameter. This crew's mission was on April 6. 1984. Some history of this space shuttle: First called STA-099. Challenger was built to serve as a test vehicle for the Space Shuttle program. But despite its Earth-bound beginnings, STA-099 was destined for space. In the late 1970s. NASA strived for a lighter weight orbiter, but a test vehicle was needed to ensure the lighter airframe could handle the stress of space flight. Computer software at the time wasn't yet advanced enough to accurately predict how STA-099's new, optimized design would respond to intense heat ... moreand stress. The best solution was to submit the vehicle to a year of intensive vibration and thermal testing.
