EARLY MIKE OTT TROUT~FOLK ART FISH SPEARING DECOY~ICE FISHING LURE
Mike Ott is a very obscure fish decoy carver from Northern Minnesota. His work is included in the collector's reference book FISH DECOY MAKERS PAST AND PRESENT and are seldom seen on ebay. This decoy is part of a nice little collection that just came in. It represents a trout and is painted in a very unusual folk art style. This is an early example of Mike's work before he went toward the ultra realistic style and has to be very unusual. It measures 6 1/2" long and has carve gill and mouth features. It is completely hand made and hand painted in the old schiool tradition. The condition is original and lightly fished with light wear and signs of age. The maker has signed the decoy by carving MO into the belly. It also has 2" carved next to the MO but I am not sure what this may mean. Ott& Brewer was the first company to make Belleek in the United States. The bowl is in a fantastic shape with a very thin translucent body where the veins of the leaves are molded right into the body. It’s almost as if the leaf was removed from the cabbage. The glaze is matt. Decorated with a magnificent branch of golden stems and leaves with pink and lavender flowers. There are two ribbon like panels that look like gross grain ribbon in gray outlined in black and decorated in a gold filigree design. The edge of the bowl is trimmed in gold and on the outside is gold sponged along the top edge of the leaf curl highlighting the texture ... moreof the bowl. The Feet are made to look like tulip buds decorated in gold with just a hint of pink peeking out of each. The Dragon spout looks almost dog like and it has wings were the spout is mounted to the pitcher. The handle(body of the dragon has two clawed feet and a tail which is where it attaches to the body of the pitcher. The body of the pitcher is tapered and bottle like and the bottom third of the pitcher features a molded design of geometric feeling(blocks with lines) The entire sides of the pitcher are decorated with gilt. Studio painted flowers, and leaves with golden clouds floating in the background. The pitcher is made without a lid and the neck is striped with broad and fine line stripes of brilliant gold. The decoration is hand-painted leaves and flowers. The flowers are pink and the leaves are matt finish gold. The flowers are outlined in the gold and the background leaves are painted gray with detail. The handle is trimmed in gold with a decoration on the bend. The top of the vase is unusual because it is cut top or to define the mouth of the vase was made and when the slip was green(before firing) the mouth was cut to create four pieces and slightly twisted than fired. The scenes feature lilies. Tulips and leaves which are all outlined in gold, than slightly tinting several of the leaves and flowers in a blue gray. The entire pot. Handle, lid, and spout are all outlined in gold. The Chocolate Pot is marked with a Circle Mark featuring the monogram of the company which was used on dinnerware and serving pieces in the late-19 th century. 1883-1893 Ott & Brewer American Belleek Tête-à-tête Tea Set
Tête-à-tête Set of Tea Pot. Creamer, Sugar From the French. Tête-à-tête means literally head-to-head: A face-to-face meeting, or private conversation between two people, usually in an intimate setting. Ott& Brewer tête-à-tête sets were expensive, but nevertheless very popular. This set includes a teapot, a creamer, a sugar, and one lid which luckily fits both teapot and sugar. Sadly, its twin lid is long lost. If you are fortunate enough to have Alice Cooney Frelinghuysen's book American Porcelain: 1770-1920. Published in 1989 by The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, you will find a wonderful description of Ott& Brewer's tête-à-tête sets on pages 196-198, including photos. The set pictured in Frelinghuysen's book is hand painted and very well preserved. It's ... morealso in the permanent collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The set I'm offering here is decorated with a mother-of-pearl glaze. And gold trim on the rims and handles, which is now well worn. It must have been used for its intended purpose for many years. The gold trim could easily be restored by a professional pottery decorator. There are two tiny original manufacturing firing cracks in the rim of the sugar, next to one of the handles, which are visible in the photo. There are no chips nor repairs on any of the pieces. The tea pot. Creamer, and sugar are marked with Ott& Brewer's crown and sword Belleek backstamp. Mary Frank Gaston in her book American Belleek. Published 1984 by Collector Books, page 76, dates this mark from 1883 to 1893, as do other sources. Gaston also shows two decorated versions of this teapot in the Ott& Brewer section of this book, on pages 81& 89. Ott& Brewer was fortunate to be able to hire highly skilled and senior employees from the Irish Belleek Pottery. This tea ware is very thin. Set of two 1883-1893 Ott& Brewer American Belleek Tea Cups& S aucers(4 pieces) I'm offering for sale a pair of two very old. Eggshell thin Ott& Brewer tea cups with two matching saucers. Please see the item specifics and photos above. These are technically used(i.e. not new) but they are in near mint condition, with no chips, no cracks, no crazing, nor repairs. The four pieces are all factory decorated, with gold gilt, on the cups around the rim, base, handles; and on the saucers around the rim and the center circle. They are eggshell thin as you can see from the photo of the saucer in the stand, with some light from behind. There is some very, very slight wear to the gold on the cup rims; not unusual for 120 to 130 year old tea cups. The glaze has a stunning mirror-like appearance. And is as beautiful as the glaze on first ... moreperiod Irish Belleek tea cups(I think perhaps superior) By the time Ott& Brewer had developed their line of American Belleek, they had perfected their formula for glaze, so there is no crazing at all on these pieces. In the photos you can see reflections from the lighting, which is nearly impossible to eliminate with such reflective glazed surfaces. Ott& Brewer made the first"American Belleek" O& B was fortunate to be able to hire highly skilled and senior employees from the Irish Belleek Pottery. I use Mary Frank Gaston's book American Belleek. P.76, as a reference for the date range of manufacture. Other references will corroborate. All four pieces have the O& B Belleek crown& sword mark, designated by Gaston as 1a. This is a beautiful pair of American Belleek tea cups and saucers by the historic Ott& Brewer. Considered by many to be America's finest porcelain manufacturer. These are guaranteed genuine and at least 120 years old, possibly 130 years old. This would be a great set to start, or add to, your collection of historic American Belleek. Rare Ott& Brewer American Belleek floral cup and saucer in Belleek's Tridacna pattern. Both pieces have a fluted design. Floral decoration and gold rims. The handle follows the Tridacna split ring design finished with sponged gold. Ott& Brewer of Trenton, NJ, was only in business for 10 years, from 1883-1893. The saucer is 5-3/8" The cup is 4" wide and 1-3/4" tall. Only the cup is marked. Other than one small spot on the cup rim where the gold is slightly worn. The set is perfect. The"double mark" that is highly desirable by collectors(circa 1883) A similar pitcher but, in my opinion, nearly not as nice or colorful, appears on the front cover of Collecting American Belleek, by Loman and Petula Eng. The particulars on that piece, pictured on page 20, mention restoration to two applied leaves. In view of this, the restored pitcher is valued at $1750-$2000, with a note that the value would be $2500-$3000 if it would have been in mint condition which is rare to find. ... moreHere, I offer a variation of that rare piece! The pitcher stands 8.75" tall. The porcelain body has an elegant and rich cream matte finish. The right gold encrusted branch of the three pronged prickly handle arches up and attaches to the reverse side of the pitcher with a curled golden lotus leaf. The left gold encrusted branch of the handle arches up and attaches to the front of the pitcher near its neck and offers a gold lotus bud which offers a peak at its pink bloom. Another separate gold prickly stem that forms near the handle The area around the neck is done is a wonderful matte gold sponging. The front of the picture has fabulous heavy gold raised etched leaves on long willowy stems surrounding two glorious variegated pink lotus flowers. The petals of the lotus flowers are outlined with raised gold embellishment. Oh my. What a find. The pitcher is in wonderful condition. I see no chips, cracks, hairlines or spiders. The lotus petals to the touch reveals no flea bites. The gold is 100% intact. The only thing I note is the the gold on one of the petals of the lotus bud shows minor wear. WHAT A PIECE OF AMERICANA AND COLLECTION OF ARTISTIC SPLENDOR! Scarce and fascinating collection of pencil sketches housed in a 11 x 7 1/4 inch sketch book of 16 year old Edward L. Ott of Doylestown. Ohio created in 1887. These pencil drawings consist of adventure. Travel and the frontier/wild west, with more subjects involving the Civil War, steam boats, trains, buffaloes, Indians, hunting, country scenes, villages, ships, whaling, firemen on boats, divers, women, murder, death and more. A number of the drawings have titles or captions as these were perhaps copied from the illustrated publications of the day(not traced, though) although we believe there are originals within as well. Most of his subjects would have been personally familiar to him as he grew up in the era, and are quite reflective of the youth interest of the times. There ... moreare 50 handdrawn works bound into this book titled The Little Tycoon. There are an additional 10 drawings in pencil on loose leaves. All pictures are blank en verso. On back of the loose leafs is where he has stamped: Drawn. By, Edward, L, Ott, Doylestown, O, Feb 9 1887- First leaf is a self illustrated title page: Compliments of Edward L. Ott. Doylestown Ohio; and. He has signed it at the foot. As you can see. The front cover has loss of some of the bottom. The first 4 leaves and last leaf have loss from the bottoms as well. Leaves are unpaginated with age relating toning and tend toward the fragile; having been made of lesser quality pulp. Original cloth spine is complete and holding firmly. Card board back is missing all but 2 1/2 inches. A pH neutral mat board as been attached to this remnant to support book. The art actually is brighter and sharper than my camera will capture. If desired, these leaves would frame extremely well. This is a wonderful pictorial diary of a young man growing up in the era of westward expansion illustrating what he saw and read about. Up for auction is what I have identified by the mark on the bottom. Is an Ott& Brewer Etruria Pottery of Trenton, NJ Jardiniere Planter. This jardiniere is in excellent condition. It has a green transferware pattern all the way around with a very intricate floral design. It has embossed bands of leaves and has two embossed marblized bands in a brown shade separating the floral design. It has minor gold wear- nothing distracting. It is clean, with some glaze pops inside. Marked on the bottom Etruria in red over glaze with a 2921 gold decorators mark. It measures 11" handle to handle and stands approximately 8 3/8" tall. The Staffordshire of America" In 1852. Two immigrants from Staffordshire founded the Trenton's first industrial pottery, Taylor and Speeler on Mill Hill. In 1872, Thomas Maddock first successfully manufactured ... moreglazed earthenware here. It was extremely popular, and it gave Trenton the reputation of being the"Staffordshire of America, after the area of Staffordshire in England famous for its pottery.
