It uses three coaxial lines at right angles. One terminated by the unknown admittance and the other two terminated by a pure resistance and a pure rectance. Sampling loops in the three lines are connected in parallel, and when the loops are adjusted to produce a null the parameters of the unknown are displayed. GENERAL RADIO TYPE 1123 DIGITAL SYNCHRONOMETER CLOCK AND TIME CONTROLLER The General Radio Synchronometer passed through many iterations since they first conceived it sometime in the late 1920's. The very first practical one that GR manufactured was the Synchro-Clock Type 511 which was manufactured in the 1930's. They improved upon this over the years and made the Synchronometer Clock/Comparator Type 1103A which was part of a large rack mounted ensemble. This was the defacto standard for comparative measurements for many years. The very last GR Synchronometer. The type 1123, offered in their catalogs in the 60's was probably only available for 4 or 5 years and appears to be quite scarce. I've only seen one other for sale in the past 30 years. I used this in my Standards Lab for many years and took it out of service about 10 ... moreyears ago. It's in decent cosmetic condition and it still appears to work well. I applied a 100 kHz signal just to check it out. In the typical GR design fashion there are a number of unique features about the Digital Synchronometer, the most unusual being the method of readout. They used a very peculiar type called the Numerik Indicator which consisted of curved plates with numerals engraved upon them. A dozen incandescent light bulbs in each indicator(still available) when lit caused one of the plates to glow with the numeral, not unlike a Nixie Tube. I've never seen this type of readout used in any other instrument and it's clever, unusual and works quite well. From the manual: The Digital Synchronometer time comparator is a solid state digital clock for the calibration of frequency and time standards. It provides precise time of day information both visually and in BCD form and permits accurate comparisons between local standards and the transmission of standard time.
