Here's another of the uncommon mirror lenses(also known as catadioptric or reflex lenses) of faster aperture and shorter focal length made for 35mm film cameras. Mirror lenses are usually found in the 500mm F/8 variety. But this one is a 300mm F/5.6 and fits Konica AR/Autoreflex mount cameras. With easily available adapters, it can also be used manually with digital cameras such as Olympus and Panasonic Micro 4/3, Sony NEX, Samsung NX, Fujifilm X-Pro, Nikon 1 cameras and others. This lens is in good working order and is in about excellent minus cosmetic condition. I hunted down and used a range of 300mm mirror lenses over several years trying to find which are the best performers. And I was pleasantly surprised by this one. With its 67mm front filter thread and outer barrel just a little over 2 1/2 inches long, it's downright tiny ... moreconsidering the long telephoto reach it provides. If you can pin the focus, I found that it's got good, usable sharpness- the best I've seen in lenses of its kind- and perhaps thanks to its multicoated glass, it has fair to good contrast, too(using a lens hood also helps get the best results) The ring-like out-of-focus areas of images associated with this lens type, usually referred to as"doughnut bokeh, don't seem to occur as often or aren't as distracting as I've seen with other mirror lenses. And although this lens shows only macro markings down to 1:4 at its closest-focusing range instead of feet and meters, I measured its near-focus limit at a very short 4.3 feet/1.3 meters, which makes the lens very versatile to use. It can take some practice to get good results from mirror lenses. And you should know what they're useful for and what to expect from them. A good quality, conventional long telephoto will almost always produce better overall image quality than an equivalent mirror/reflex lens, but a mirror lens can often allow you to get shots that a conventional telephoto simply can't. The glass appears to be flawless with no scratches or fungus. The focus works smoothly. However there is a problem with the aperture it adjusts normally when the lens is off the camera but when it is mounted it will not adjust. I am not a camera technician nor do I have an optical bench. The fix may be as simple as a normal CLA(clean. Lube and adjust) I just don't know. If you know more than I, this is a chance to pickup a prime lens at a small price. As such this auction item is being sold AS IS. The aperture blades are snappy and without oil. There are virtually no signs of wear and use on the barrel or mount. This is a nice Vivitar 28-85mm f2.8-3.8( 22217870) zoom lens for all Pentax PK mount cameras. There is very slight paint wear on sharp corners and edges. And a tiny ding near the inspection label. Glass has no scratches, haze, fungus, or cleaning marks. The zoom/focus ring has a smooth feel with no creep. The lens barrel has no shake like some old lens get as they age. Aperture is snappy and responsive with no oil showing. It has a screw on metal front cap. A Pentax rear cap, and a CPC 67mm linear polarizing filter. The lens weighs 1 pound 8 ounces.
