Craftsman Hollow Chisel Mortiser Mortise Machine
Up for auction us a used Craftsman Hollow Chisel Mortiser. I have had the unit for about 6 years and haven't had much use for it. It is in good working condition and comes with all the parts and attachments that came with it when I bought it. It has some slight surface rust staining in spots from sitting around not being used that can easily be removed with a scuff pad. The staining might actually be from the cosmoline that was on the unit that wasn't removed. I tested the unit and poked a couple holes with if and it works fine. THIS IS AN OLD TIMBER-FRAME BORING MACHINE USED IN THE LATE 1800S/EARLY 1900S TO SPEED UP THE TIME IT TOOK PEOPLE TO BUILD TIMBER FRAME BARNS. HOMES, BUILDINGS OF ALL SORTS USING BEAM CONSTRUCTION WITH MORTISE AND TENON FEATURES.IN OTHER WORDS, NOT USING NAILS. THERE ARE NO NAMES OR WRITINGS ANYWHERE ON THE BORING MACHINE INDICATING WHERE IT WAS MADE OR WHO MADE IT. WHICH MEANS IT IS PROBABLY ONE OF THE OLDER ONES. NEWER ONES THAT APPEAR IN THE 1902 SEARS AND ROEBUCK CATALOG DO HAVE PLATES AFFIXED WITH THE STORE'S NAME AND DATES THEREON. THIS PIECE HAS WOOD THAT IS ALL BROWN. PROBABLY PAINTED OR STAINED, AND REMAINED THE SAME OVER THE YEARS. IT IS IN GOOD CONDITION. THE CAST IRON METAL IS ALSO IN VERY GOOD SHAPE WITH NO DENTS OR SCRAPES ANYWHERE. IF YOU LOOK TO THE LEFT OF THE TOOL. THERE IS A HOOK PIECE THAT GOES THRU A HOLE AND THAT IS NOT THERE. SORRY BUT THATS THE WAY I FOUND IT. And has been welded back together. The weld is where the size stamp and manufacturer mark would be, so it is unmarked. I believe that this fits the Barnes as well as the Smith style machine. This bit has the weld. Some dings and marks, but the cutting end appears to be in fairly good shape. I suspect that you will want to sharpen it yourself. I have tried to take enough pictures. So you can judge for yourself the condition. I assume anyone buying this is familiar with the bit and machine. It has a tapered end. I suspect that it is a morris taper, but not sure. This listing is for a J.A. Fay& Egan used jointer mortise combo. This machine is a great piece to be restored. It has a round 4 blade rotor. Original fence, and mortising machine. The knives on the jointer measure 12" long. This unit has been sitting for some time. But the tables slide and the blades turn. There is no motor. Everything looks to be pretty complete. The knobs, gears, and castings are all in good shape. I did not see any cracks. I am not sure of the model number. These is a 308 cast in under the blades. Multico PM 20 Hollow Chisel Mortiser / mortise machine
This Multico PM 20 hollow chisel mortising machine has been sitting in the corner of my shop for 5 years. I have never used the machine as I just don't ever have a need to make mortises. This is an awesome mortiser and I kept thinking that one day I would use it. But now I am tired of pushing it around the shop and need the space. My father gave me this machine 5 years ago. He purchased it new, but I am not sure what year he purchased it. I happen to know that he never used it either. This unit is in excellent condition and is a little dusty. It is very well designed and very well built. The tool head slides left/ right, in/ out. This is a feature only found on higher end machines. It has a little tiny amount of surface rust in a few places due to lack of use, but there is no pitting and the rust can easily be removed with a scotch brite ... morepad. This unit includes a full set of five Clico Sheffield Tooling Ltd chisels that have never been used either. If you don't know what these are, you should search for them and see what they sell for each. I do not have the owners manual. It appears to have all the parts. It includes the stand shown in the photos that allows you to put a door on its side for mortising. This does not include the HTC mobile base the machine is sitting on in the photo. Buyer must pick this unit up near Gainesville. Georgia, USA. Buyer must pickup within ten days of auction close or it will be relisted or offered to second highest bidder. No checks.
