It attaches to a Wild theodolite above the telescope. The larger piece is a computing unit that takes the straight line distance. And converts it to horizontal or vertical distance. The larger unit would be attached to a tripod, the the theodoloite would attach on top of the large unit, then the small unit would attach to the theodolite. It has a male tripod mounting point on the underside a female one on the top. With the boxy orange body of the instrument able to rotate freely around this core, with a knob that can lock it in place. On top of the unit is a numeric keypad and digital LED display.
