It clicked audibly as it should. IMPORTANT: The directions on the side of the detector say you need to wait a minute for the unit to warm up. It takes every bit of that minute too. So turn it on and then wait 60 seconds for the detector to function ... moreproperly. This detector functions 100% perfectly with the included AC power adapter plugged in. It has a long cord. If you want to use it without the power cord plugged in the batteries will need to be replaced, they aren't holding a charge long. They're rechargeable Ni-Cd batteries. You could buy some replacements or it looks to my eyes that regular batteries might fit in there. I didn't have any that size to try though.
