This is a brass"Wolf Oxygen Deficiency Detector" Complete with the 8-page owner's manual. The steel carrying case is 15 x 7 x 5-1/2 inches. The case cover has three hinges, two snap clasps, and a handle. Alongside the handle is a brass plate that reads: WOLF SAFETY LAMP COMPANY OF AMERICA BROOKLYN NEW YORK U.S.A. The lamp itself has an oval brass plaque that reads: WOLF SAFETY LAMP COMPANY OF AMERICA NEW YORK U.S.A. This was an item in my late father's estate. He was a telephone pioneer. Having worked for the telephone company as a cable splicer for 42 years before retirement in about 1970's. They used these lamps to detect oxygen deficiency in urban buried-cable manholes before descending into the manhole and risking being overcome by low oxygen in the enclosed space. The lamp(font and bonnet) is all of brass construction(unlike ... morethe coal mining safety lamps that are mostly aluminum) The striker emits a strong spark when struck. The wick is adjustable to calibrate the flame. This lamp has a hinged mirror that allows the flame to be viewed from above the lamp. For example, if the lamp were being lowered into a manhole. The lamp was secured closed with a key(included) It can be seen in the lamp in some of the photos. There is a aspirator bulb(included) that was used to draw air from the manhole via flexible tubing(not included) that had been lowered into the manhole so as to draw a sample of the manhole environment. The aspirator tubing would be connected to the barbed fitting protruding from the side of the lamp. The kit contains the original 8-page owner's manual. Folded, of which a few representative pages have been pictured. The paper is yellow and brittle. There are a few spare loose parts in the case- several gaskets. A spare glass(chipped) a spare striker and some springs for it. In addition the case contains a brass wire brush that was to be used for cleaning the lamp. The case's exterior is rusty.
