Up for sale is a Vertical Capstan Winch. Made by the American Engineering Co. This Capstan has been recently tested at 208 Volts 3 phase, and runs and operates flawlessly. It emits very little noise, and it shows no warning signs of any sort of motor wear. Although the specific capacity values remain unknown, we estimate it's weight to be around 750 pounds, and it's build date to be in the 1940's. Due to research on similar items, our estimate of it's starting pull is(at a minimum) around 5000 pounds. It consistently pulls rope or chain at exactly 48 feet per minute. Freuhauf Trailer Winch (Braden M3)
Freuhauf trailer winch. But it looks just like a Braden M3 and thats what I thought it was when I first saw it. Of course it was covered with good old Oregon coast range clay at the time which looks just like rust. But when I went to clean it up I found this green and red paint under the clay, as well as the Freuhauf markings. It was a big surprise to me, I didn't know that Freuhauf made winches. But after a little searching around on the interweb I found that they were actually made by Braden, which would explain why it looks so much like an M3. Also, the parts on the inside all have Braden part numbers so thats a dead give away. This winch is in really good shape except for the spool free lever. The weak spot on most of these I've seen. However whoever fabricated this handle did a good job, it works very well. The winch works well. ... moreI've used them that were in way worse shape. It does have a new gasket on the drive side. I opened it up to see what shape the gears were in and the old one fell apart. Also had to replace one bolt on the cover that was missing. There is no gear oil in the case right now, I drained it when I opened it up, just so you know if you buy it.
