This Vintage sprocket clutch with 90 degree gear has been gently restored. What does gently restored mean? The overall objective is to preserve as much as the old tool or item with its lifetime patina as possible without the use of power tools. Metal is typically initially cleaned using mineral oil. Or a weak solution of washing soda and water and if necessary brief electrolysis to remove and or convert rust to black oxide. Whichever method is best, a scotch brite plastic cleaning pad is used with water so the underlying metal is not damaged. A heat gun is immediately used to blow dry and eliminate moisture which is followed by a hand rubbed coat of mineral oil. After letting the oil“soak in” for a day or so, the item is wiped cleaned then hand rub in bees wax to seal it. A weak solution of oil soap and water is used to remove grime, old ... moreoils and dirt from wood which is air or blowed dry with a heat gun. This is followed by a hand rub of“feed and wax" If the situation requires it, a soft brass bristle brush or“0000” steel wool is ocassionaly used. It should be noted that tools and items are not conditioned for use such as sharpening, tightening or replacement of parts. This is left up to the judgement of the new owner as there is a large range of utilization of older tools. This is a hobby with the enjoyment of knowing these items might last generations with care. Paul O. Abbe Right Angle Transmission/Drive for Ball/Pebble Mill? Reduction Gear
Paul O. Abbe Right Angle Transmission/Drive For sale- a Paul O. Abbe Inc. Right Angle Transmission/Drive with a Craftsmen ½ HP electric motor. I assume this would have been used as the drive mechanism for an Abbe Ball or Pebble Mill. But I do not have the mill. Actually I think I might have had and sold the mill years ago. The surplus tag on this says it has been in storage since February of 1988! So as you can imagine it was a bit dirty until I wiped it down. Now it looks pretty good. I think it is pretty obvious that whatever motor Abbe originally equipped it with has been replaced by the beefier Craftsmen. Which turns at 1725 RPM, pretty standard for electric motors. So maybe not a collector’s item any more but definitely a workhorse. One that hasn’t lifted a finger in 15 years. There is no model number on the transmission or whatever ... moreyou want to call it. So I can’t hunt up any specs for you. It visibly reduces the motor RPMs. But I can’t tell you to what level. If you were going to mate this to an Abbe mill you might have to get creative. When the larger Craftsmen motor was installed the drive was raised a bit to line up with the new motor. I think you can see in the pictures where they put a piece of plexi about a half an inch thick under the drive to raise it up. When plugged in the motor fired up immediately and started turning the shaft of the drive at an unknown RPM. That is the extent of my testing and NO warranty is offered. However. IF you pay the asking price and find it has a problem you cannot live with within 14 days of receipt you may return it. Returns are ONLY allowed on Buy It Now Purchases. Accepted Best Offers are strictly an as is sale. No returns allowed. Return would be for a refund of the purchase price. Not including shipping costs. Just so that we are clear on that. For sale is a pair of small worm gear reduction boxes. One box runs 44:1 ratio and is equiped with brass bushings. It's size is approx. 2.5" x 2.4"x3.2" This box is missing two. Screws from the top cover, but should be simple to find replacements. This is just a dust cover anyway. Also has some nicks on one side. The other box runs a 100:1 ratio and has ball bearings. Here is a very heavy-duty gear reduction unit that was used in a local lumber mill. When the mill closed down. And I ended up with it and planned on putting it to use. My plans have changed and I no longer have a need for it. From what I understand, this unit is in good condition and it seems to turn smoothly and works well. I don't know a whole lot about these units, but it looks like you could change the output gear ratio if you want to to by putting a shaft in place of one of the plates on the side of the unit.
