Scholars contend that the bronze currency found in the region were issued by local semi-independent governors, or Tegins, in the Kashmir Smast valley, paying allegiance to ... morethe greater Hunnic Tegins of Gandhara and Bactria. Gupta and Hadraker I XXVIII A 30(202) A wonderful huge silver coin from the lifetime of Buddha. First issue Karshapanas are very rare. And are hard to find. The date when these coins started being issued is most obscure. It is fairly certain that by ca.470 BC the large flat karshapanas such as this coin were replaced by karshapanas of the same weight but struck on smaller, thicker flan. So the tentative dating of these coins is ca.550 BC(when the first coins of this type were produced) until about 470 BC, when they were replaced by type II karshapanas. The list of rulers from this period was as follows: Bhattiya- 545 BC; Bimbasara- ca.545-493 BC; Ajatashatru- ca.493-461 BC. A very nice vintage Orpheum No. 1 Mandolin Banjo made by Rettberg and Lang ca. 1920. This apparently was a custom made instrument for Joseph Gilman. Bridgeport, Conn. Serial number 06157 stamped on dowel along with the name. Very good condition overall. Moderate fret wear, inlays are in very good shape. No cracks. Tuners seem to work though a little stiff. Elevated tone ring is in good condition. Missing the bridge and tailpiece cover. Some brackets show a little oxidation but the other metal pieces are much cleaner and brighter.

At some point in its history someone attached one end of a Tibetan dorje. It appears to have been there for quite some time as the entire piece has a warm dark patina. The lid also has stones set instead of glass. They appear to be amber and a white stone with striations. The top edge of the lid is trimmed with auspicious symbols. The enameling around the outside of the base is intact with no damage but the inside has some loss on one side. This does not show when the lid is seated. This old beauty measures approx. 6 1/2" wide X 6 1/8" tall. The Air Force Institute of Technology(AFIT) serves a similar purpose. The United States Army does not have a similar institution.
