I'm closing my boutique in Chicago and have to part with this spectacular piece. I don't know its provenance but I can picture it in Marshall Field's 60 years ago as a checkout counter. It is in very good vintage condition. Because of the reflections. The pictures do not do it justice. It's stunning! Oak General Store Checkout Counter- with detached marble top. I was told this piece was a candy counter that survived the Chicago fire. Hmmmmm… not sure about that. But I think this is late 1800’s or early 1900’s. It came to me as a gift from someone who bought it at an antique store that closed in Saint Paul, MN more than 40 years ago. This piece had a dark burgundy finish when I received it. I stripped the dark finish off and applied shellac. The column pieces on each side are not original however the“carved” capitals for these columns are original, but upon stripping them and close inspection they do not seem to be wood. I do not know what they are made of. There is one missing“egg and dart” molding on the right side at the top. There are also several chipped off“eggs” on the other moldings(please see pictures) The counter is an antique ... moreand therefore might have other blemishes. It is in very nice condition, but of course it has wear from lots of use. It is sold as is. The back is OPEN with a bottom and middle shelf, plus cash drawer. Dimensions of the counter are approximately 7’ long, 2’ deep and 33.5" high. I write approximately because my measurements could be off by ¼ of an inch. I listed this with ebay's freight shipper option. I also offer FREE LOCAL PICK UP. In addition, I am willing to meet with two different shipper/packers of your choice at a specific time so that you can get two bids on having this packed and shipped to you. Mi) Identified as being a General Store prior to being the Wiffletree. It has a solid 2' top with an upper 6" ledge that is 8" above the top. Giving the customer a ledge to set items on, or lean on, which is easy to envision as they talk to the store-keeper and catch up on the day's news. This auction is for an old Marx supermarket/ checkout counter playset. The 3 female figures are marked Marx but the counter and shopping cart are not marked. The female figures might also work in a Marx dollhouse if they don't actually go with the supermarket pieces. Unfortunately the supermarket counter has a crack on the counter and one side of the handle on the shopping cart is broken. The figures are in good overall condition. And one does have some black marks on the back of her head. The figures are 3.5 inches tall. The counter measures about 6 inches wide. All pieces are plastic. Buyer to pay 4.75 shipping.
