Here is a lightly used very lightly used high precision plate punch. This unit was only used a half a dozen times. It will work on the whole ryobi 3302/3304 family of presses as well as some hamadas and heidelbergs. This is really a universal plate punch for this fornmat of press. All similar but each very different some of the chops are filled in with glaze and arent as easy to see as the other ones but all are there. Awesome Warren MacKenzie Studio Mingei Pottery Yunomi Tea Cup Shoji Hamada Awesome- Mint Warren MacKenzie Shino Glazed Yunomi Tea Cup. New- Condition. This is a beautiful Warren MacKenzie Tea Cup in Warrens beautiful Shino glaze! The Tea cup measures 3 3/4 inches high x 3 inches wide. This is an opportunity to own a wonderful authentic piece of warren Mackenzie's work. Most of my pieces were purchased from Warrens studio in Stillwater Minnesota. To the casual observer determining the origin of Warren's pottery may seam difficult but to the trained eye a MacKenzie pot can be deducted quite simply with the following criteria. 1. Warren uses a stoneware clay body mfg at continental clay. This clay body is a custom stoneware blend with iron added to it. The clay body without glaze will be warrens own unique color with iron spots in it. ... more2. Thumb print" Warren uses his wire to cut and remove the soft clay body from the potters wheel. This creates a"thump print" swirling effect on the bottom of the pot that is distinctly his. 3. View point. The style with which Warren MacKenzie is able to convey a soft"loose" pot and still retain the integrity of the shape. 4. Glaze. Warren uses only certain types and styles of glazes. 5. Hand dipping. Warren's work is hand dipped. On most occasions you can see where he has held the pot while dipping in the glaze. 6. Forms. Warren is a production potter. He typically produces similar shapes or forms of pottery. 7. Education. Warren studied under Bernard Leach and Shoji Hamada. He has developed a style that has borrowed from his teacher and uniquely his own. 8. Body of evidence. From books to pictures on the web. There are countless examples of Warrens work to be viewed. Studied and compared. This is just one piece of my large collection. I will be listing multiple pieces of Warren's work. I will also be listing work from his students and his contemporaries.

Offering this vintage studio pottery cabinet vase. I has beautiful hand painted brush work and is a hand or wheel thrown piece. It was made by a very skilled potter as is evident. Condition is excellent with no issues. Height is 3 1/4. The top opening is 1 1/2 inches wide, the base is 1 7/8 inches wide and it is approx. 3 1/4 wide at the widest. It has the chop mark stamp as shown. I don't know the potter but appears to be reminiscent of Mackenzie, Hamada or Temple. If you know the potter, I would appreciate the information. Henry Hammond Tenmoku Glaze Pottery Bowl English MidCentury Modern Bernard Leach/ Hamada Stoneware bowl with rich tenmoku glaze. Elegant foot and striking design using iron and a deep black. This is a signed piece by the well known English potter, Henry Hammond, who studied with Bernard Leach, among others. There is obvious influence of both Leach and Shoji Hamada in this piece. The bowl stands 3.5" tall and is 5.5" on diameter. There is absolutely no damage and the symmetry and form are perfection! Henry Hammond. Born 1914, studied for five years at the Croydon School of Art and at the age of twenty won a scholarship to the Royal College of Art where he was taught by, among others, William Staite Murray. In 1939 he was offered the post of Pottery Instructor at the West Surrey College of Art. But was unable to accept it as he had ... moreto serve his country in the second world war. On his return from war service he spent some time with Bernard Leach at St Ives and then went back to Surrey to take up the position at the West Surrey College of Art where he continued until his retirement in 1980. During the post war years he had a studio in Hampshire which he shared with Paul Barron until Paul's death in 1983. Together they helped build up the ceramics department at Farnham School of Art. Henry was awarded the MBE in 1980. Six years before his death. He is best known for his brush decorated stoneware. But also worked in porcelain and in his early days as a potter, exclusively slipware. Serious downsizing means that this and many other wonderful items must go so check out my other auctions for outstanding buys. Kimura Ichiro Mashiko Plate Japanese Master Potter Hamada Leach Rich Iron Glazing Although this plate is unsigned. It is attributed to the master Japanese potter, Kimura Ichiro( 1915- 1978) He studied with Shoji Hamada in the mid 1930's and founded his own studio in 1947. This piece has characteristics of his most important works. It featured black-persimmon glaze with a rich iron glazing. The plate has strong composition and is substantial measuring 12" on diameter and 2" tall at the rim. You can see the wheel marks on the reverse and the small firing spots on the surface of the plate. The plate has a nice foot and wonderful symmetry. There is no damage to the piece. No chips, cracks or repairs. This is an elegant, important plate, worthy of a fine collection. The couple who’s estate this came from lived in Japan for two decades and bought many wonderful pieces. Most from the 17th and 18th centuries. The Nuka pours over iron pigment give it a Hamada like texture. It is not the quality of the great master as the form is not as elegant. But is does have a very nice shape and beautiful foot. There is a swirl detail on the base and the firing pits give it great texture. The exterior wall has a detail that looks like a makers mark. It looks like an S with a swirled line through it. Kinjo Jiro Living National Treasure Hip Flask Mingei Japan Hamada I have great confidence that this hip flask is produced by one of Japan's most notable potters. Kinjo Jiro who was made a National Living Treasure in 1985. His fish on hip flask examples are found in many of the leading museums and galleries in the world and no serious collection of Japanese pottery should be without one. This one is particularly interesting with the fish in a familiar downward motion but with more abstraction to the form than some more traditional models. To see some examples of his work see: Kinjo Jiro's connection to Shoji Hamada is well known. Kinjo began pottery at the age of 13. At age 26. Mingei philosopher Yanagi Soetsu and potter Hamada Shoji"discovered" Kinjo upon their visit to Okinawa, and felt great mutuality between his works ... moreand the ideals they were expounding at the time. Kinjo excelled at glazing, eching, hakeme(white slip brush strokes) and the potter's wheel, and was designated an IICP holder in 1985. Kinjo was a humble and quiet man, who resented being called"sensei, always thought of himself as a craftsman, not an artist. This utmost humility lives on in his work. This is an outstanding example of a dachibin by this important and famous Japanese potter. It is museum quality and belongs in a great collection. it spans 7.5"With a full height of 6.5" and weighs 3.5 pounds. There are no chips, cracks or problems. Likely made in Mashiko in the period when Shoji Hamada and others were revolutionizing the form and substance of Japanese Pottery. The trailing Nuka and texture of the glazing( maybe fired in salt kiln) give this charger a wonderful organic quality. The symmetry is excellent and the foot is beautifully constructed. There has been no damage done to the piece but it does have a burst bubble in the glaze near the center of the plate and you can see the white show through in a small spot. Mashiko Japanese Pottery Turquoise 1960's Hamada Plate MidCentury Modern Charger
Mashiko-Yaki Japanese Pottery Turquoise Plate Charger Vintage Estate Shoji Hamada This beautiful turquoise plate is not a new piece from Mashiko's ever growing folk pottery center. It is a vintage plate from the late 1950's early'60's and was acquired from an estate in the Northeast.US. The couple lived in Japan for many years and most of the pieces in the auction were packed away for several decades. There is no sign of wear on any of the pieces I acquired. Of course. The brilliant turquoise of this plate was pioneered in its use by Shoji Hamada when he set up his kiln in Mashiko. Interested in functional modern forms, Hamada is the most important figure in MidCentury Modern Japanese folk art pottery. Although I am not attributing this plate to Hamada, the influence of the master is clearly seen in this piece. A short bio ... moreis below. This plate is 11" on diameter with a beautiful foot and striking design. The glaze is soft on the front surface and brighter on the underside as it slips over the clay body. There is absolutely no damage to the piece and I have links to galleries where these sell for around $175. I have more plates including attributes to Ichiro in other auctions this month. Bio: Mashiko Sanko-kan is the former home. Workshop and kiln of Shoji Hamada. As you will learn when you visit, Hamada, who died in 1978, had been designated as a Living National Treasure in 1955 for his art. One of Mashiko’s most famous potters, he is widely credited with elevating Mashiko-yaki from the status of mere kitchen ware to that of folk art and modern tableware. Mashiko Japanese Ceramic Pottery Brush Pot Minghei Trailing Nuka MidCentury This is a nice example of an Japanese artist's brush pot. It is done in the Minghei style. In the Mashiko tradition. Free hand rice stalks grace the front of the pot. This is a wheel turned piece with ridges in the body, swirl marks on the base and a nicely constructed foot. The glaze is beautiful with trailing Nuka over Siena/Rust. It has excellent symmetry, no chips, cracks or problems. It stands 4" tall and is 3" on the rim diameter. Probably made in the 1970s or earlier. Very well made Shoji Hamada. Mackenzie Warren influenced(or made by) brown clay vase with gray cream and dark blue glaze. Vase measures 9.75" tall and 2.75" across the opening by 4.5" across the top(under the spout opening) by 5.245" across the middle and tapers down to 3.25" across the base. One light crack( probably from the firing) on the underside that is unnoticeable. Several small dimples through out. Shoji Hamada Mashiko Plate - Beautiful Example of the Great Master (no box)
Beautiful example of Shoji Hamada's work. The plate measures 8-5/8-inches in diameter and features the grass and flower pattern which seems to be rarer than his broken cane pattern. This plate was received from the estate of a person who purchased the item directly from Hamada in the 50's while in Japan. I do not have the tomobako. But will send the buyer all the information I received with the plate. The plate does show some surface gloss wear. Probably from the stacking of plates. There is no edge chips or cracks. The glaze features the hallmark brush strokes of Hamada. If you have studied Hamada this is definitely his pattern and work. You can check out other Hamada plates online that have this pattern and wonderful glaze work- a museum piece to be sure. This is a beautiful Warren MacKenzie Shino Guinomi Sake Cup! Made in early 1970's. The cup measures 1 1/2 inches high x 2 3/4 inches in diameter.
